California. members...

I have signed up with Team In Training to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. So, I'm training to run in San Francisco on October 21st the Women's Nike 1/2 Marathon. Well I live in Georgia and have never been to California, so what do I need to check out while I'm in San Francisco????

Please check out my website and help find a cure:

Re: California. members...

I lived in San Francisco for... 15 years, at least? Now I am across the Bay. How many "free" days do you have, and what types of things do you like to see/ do? Do you like typical touristy stuff, or the off the beaten path? More of a day tripper, or a night owl? At least in October, you are unlikely to encounter fog.

Also, will you have a car (e.g. to be able to drive over the Golden Gate Bridge and into Marin County)?

Re: California. members...

We are arriving Friday and I'm trying to stay till Wednesday. I have some family members that are also going for support, so I'm sure they will rent a car.
good places to eat?
the typical tourist things to do?

Re: California. members...

how long are you here for?

just for starters:
golden gate bridge
napa wine country - be sure you bring some wine home with you.
stanford university
alacatraz
take a cable car to:
downtown sf/ embarcadero/ pier 39/ fishermans wharf
sausalito
at&t park
carmel/ monterey (beautiful running down there)
koit tower (go during weekday)
ghiradelli square

bring a laptop and pick out some restaurants.
nothing better than learning about a town's culture than through it's food.

maybe california annie can set up a meet & greet

Re: California. members...

no no no... don't waste your time on Stanford U. CAL BERKELEY. Now that is a real campus! But I probably wouldn't even do that, with your limited time...

Let me rack my brain some when the kid isn't whining at me for every little thing, and I will come up with some stuff. We have until October, afterall. You will be plenty busy just staying in S.F. -- the only side trip I'd do is Marin headlands for the view (and maybe Guaymas restaurant in Tiburon), and Sonoma instead of Napa, but that's just me. Napa is more touristy, and will charge you for each and every sip you take. Not so in Sonoma (I collect wine... must add that to your hobby thread ).

ooh, what was i thinking... marshawn lynch's mom woulda killed me if she read this!

if you're in to the freak/ beyond natural / pierced out, tattooed faced, bearded women sideshows, walk through telegraph ave in berkeley (it's safe, believe me) or the famous haight ashbury in SF. we like to go green here. eco friendly.

if i may suggest some scenery, lake tahoe's not that bad a drive, especially around that time. snow "might" be falling (but i doubt it). beautiful scenery none the less.

if you like to surf, october's perfect to check out mavericks!
