Question Are people/kids today smarter than 100+ years ago?

I do not believe this is the case.

Sure, with the crutch of computers and technology more information is readily available. However, as an example of how children were once SMART - as in much SMARTER than you or your kids - I offer into evidence an 8th grade exam from the year 1895.

If you have a child, say 12-16 years old, let your little child impress you with his or her answers!!! This should be sufficient evidence as to just how dumbed down people are today. You can go back to ancient times and find evidence that they were much 'smarter' also.

Just a thought.

We have made incredible advances in areas like the sciences, but no, that does not make us any smarter. I think kids now have lost the ability to think creatively: out of the box. So there will be fewer "geniuses" who come up with these breakthrough ideas... just more drones.

This would be better if the link for the answers was active -- that way I might have a chance of getting a few right (by cheating). Good stuff -- that test covers a lot of ground. I think if a high school senior could do that test today, they would probably be reasonably well educated.

Here you go cheater.

This is the one I was wondering about.
Quote:
2. A wagon box is 2 ft. deep, 10 feet long, and 3 ft. wide. How many bushels of wheat will it hold?

The wagon box contains 2 x 10 x 3 = 60 cubic feet. A struck bushel equals 1 1/4 cubic feet. A heaped bushel in general equals 1 1/4 struck bushels. Therefore the wagon box if heaped contains 60 bushels and if struck, 1/5th less or 48 bushels.

I agree.....we are much dimmer than past generations. And most of it is b/c of social pressures, laziness, and a barely functioning, liberally biased education system.

Re: Are people/kids today smarter than 100+ years ago?

I also find that with schools allowing kids to bring calculators to class starting at an early age, that alot of kids can't even do basic math. I was at a fast food place recently, and the girl behind the counter had a difficult time trying to calculate what change to give me back. Even though the till tells them the amount to give, she had a hard time trying to figure out the right combo of coins to add up to the amount I was supposed to be getting back.
