I go to a rather large technical college, and basically throughout my life I have been into computers, building them and what not. However, once I got into the programming part (I only like hardware) I decided to change my major to business...and now I have to take extremely easy classes such as "Learning to Keyboard" which this class, is supposed to prepare people for business documenting\accounting, as well as "future computer development" which could of course mean hardware right?
Everything was going fine up until we get a little test...and I get into an argument with my teacher over it, I was arguing with her mainly because she was telling me I was WRONG when I was RIGHT and the test was also teaching people the WRONG thing, which annoys the hell out of me.
Here is the test.
Note how stupid the test actually is, but also note that one of the answers is "CPU (Central Processing Unit) now of course, I don't see a chip sitting around the computer, all there is (note that also the CD should not be called a "DISK" it should be called a CD or CD-Rom because floppy disks are often called "Disks", is the computer as the last answer to be filled out...so I put "PC" turn it in, and of course my teacher tells me "NO, you're wrong, it's called a CPU" I try to explain to her that it IS a "PERSONAL COMPUTER" and that a "CPU" is the brain of the computer which is INSIDE the "Personal Computer" attached to the motherboard....after arguing for about FIVE minutes and me actually having to PULL up a picture of a motherboard layout, she finally says "Fine, I won't count it against you but you're wrong"
Whatever I said, and just went and sat back down, but it still pisses me off when you are paying for a class in college...and you are being taught wrong things. Whenever she wants us to do something she always says "Now go on your cpu and..." I swear to god it makes me want rip off the keyboard and wail on her face with it I HATE bad teachers, but I have noticed every college is full of them.
That is rediculous and you already know who's right. Maybe you'll need to pull out a text that defines CPU, PC, CD, and disk and shove it in her face. In addition, that test seems a little to elementary (i.e. 2nd grade maybe) for a technical college.

LOL - wow, did that bring back memories. Third term at DeVry here in Calgary, one of our classes involved computer hardware and how to do basic rebuilds. They wanted us to spend around $ 90 CDN on a technical textbook relating to rebuilding of PC's. We skimmed the textbook and chapter 3 was about hand tool recognition. Their was a photograph that showed us what a screwdriver, IC extraction tool, static strap, etc looked like. We protested and the text was dropped as a requirement. By third term, you are building basic circuits, such as a modem, am/fm radio circuits etc, and they wanted us to learn how to recognize a screwdriver?? First term I could understand, but third?

Next time she asks you to get on your CPU go to your PC and start taking it apart and get the CPU for her and ask what now teacher.

Ask her about the intel core duo processors that feature two CPU's in the same chip.
I have an Itanium CPU on a keychain. Kinda funny that it can fit in my pocket, being a CPU and all...

Why not ask her about the quad processors or anything else? Because all she'd do is blink and so go back and work on your cpu
If I started taking apart the schools crappy computers I would more than likely be kicked out for "vandalism" even though I would end up putting it back together and it would still be working...whatever though, I plan to change colleges very shortly.

This is common with the computer illiterate, you'll just have to get used to it. It annoys the hell out of me, but I bite my tongue and deal with it. I suggest you do the same. When it comes right down to it, you probably easily figured out the correct testing answer.
It looks like the test was more geared towards a 50 something baby boomer that's heading back to school than someone who was born in the last 2 or 3 decades. No offense to all you boomers, just that computers have been a part of the school system for decades now and we shouldn't have to go that far back to cover the basics.
When you go to school to become a mechanic, do they teach you on a model T? Is there a test that requires you to identify the wheels, tires, engine and steering wheel? (maybe there is, I wouldn't know but it seems a little regressive)
