First off, in regard to going to the pow wow for college, we had to choose a different culture from our own and attend an event pertaining that culture- I wasn't 'forced' to go to a pow wow to attain credit I decided that the NA culture was somewhat intriguing (this was several years ago, before I actually knew more about them), so decided to attend a pow wow, where a Navajo Code Talker was present. Now, being military myself as well as my husband, we thought that was something that not everyone would have the chance to partake in, and that was the main reason we went. Yes, there were 'touristy' things there, but for us, we took more away from it than just stuffing ourselves w/ Indian bread and turquios necklaces. We, honestly, were moved by the various ceremonies they performed... one in which an eagle feather fell onto the floor from one's regalia and they did this whole thing regarding that sacred feather. We thought it was neat... just our opinion
Jump ahead several years to now, and I have a somewhat skewed idea regarding the NA culture. Being in WA state, and living somewhat close to 'the Res' as people up here call it, I have firsthand accounts of the horrible lives they live. I have seen how they treat their environment (trash everywhere, dumpy living conditions, etc) as well as their pets... they don't believe in/can't afford?/whatever proper care for their pets, but yet come in to the vet clinic smelling like a brewery... trust me, there are things that will piss you off to no end.
And before people get their panties in a wad, no I'm not stereotyping the/your culture... this is just what I've seen....
kinda sad, actually
I apologize to a degree. I thought you had gone to some Chumash pow wow at Golden Gate park. I just don't buy a thesis that certain "peoples" are more attuned then westerners. I also did a comparative religion class assignment. I spent a week in a Buddist monastery. I can't say I learned much, except meditation is painful, legs burning, unable to move until everyone else does. It reminded me of a scene in Semi Tough, were no one was allowed to get up and use the bathroom.
And I apologize for fake cred. I'm 5/8 Spanish, 1/4 French, and 1/8 Papago, not truly NA, but I did spend a summer doing work on a Lokota res. What I took from that time, the NA culture was decimated by the orphanage system, that was'nt ended until Nixon. I see the pow wow as a form of re-intrducing traditions. I partook in a couple of religous ceremonies, out of curiosity. They struck me as being similar to other pratices from other parts of the world, such as acetsism, fasting and meditation. Not better, or worse, just different.

PS
Thank you for your service

Re: December 21, 2012

Here's some thoughts:

1) Iran's Nuke program should be able to turn out enough ballistic missles and nuke TNT tonnage to flatten the US by August to November 2012. Coincidence?

2) Our planet is currently losing it's magnetic field that protects the Earth from UV rays from the sun, the PLANET will die within 10 years if the magnet field disappears. Of course the polarity of our planet has flipped 14 times in history (over millions of years), is this one of those times? Or is it dooms day, scientists say it's a coin's flip of a chance either way?

3) Earth's core is cooling and slowing in movement, when it stops and or solidifies, game over. The planet would cool to the point that plants wouldn't grow, all wild animals would die including all plant and animal life in the seas. In time all human life will cease to exist.

4) For now, I'm more worried about the Mexico-United States-Canada merge than that, and getting the US dollar back on gold standard before it crashes like many other currencies have.

I do like this thread, thought provoking............

1) Yup, coincedence.

2) I'll call it in the air......heads......we win.

3) Is it possible this has been happening all along and we are just figuring out now because of advances in technology?

4) I like you Americans and all, but I hope our 2 Countries never merge into one.

I appreciate that
I have found, unfortunately, that a lot of things have fallen to the wayside regarding other cultures' customs, NA included. I also think that everyone should take the time, as did you and I, and experience other cultures and/or religions just to get a bigger perspective and understanding of why those people are the way they are- even those people who believe, for whatever reason, the world is ending on 12/21/12!
There are so many different views/ideologies in this world to just blindly accept just one... just my .02

It doesn't really matter.... by 2012 the earth will be completely uninhabitable due to global warming. Humans face complete extinction in the coming years, possibly months!
oh man, that's funny.

I'm not a hippie. I don't like the politics of the US...nothing to do with the people. So, no...I don't want the US and Canada to ever merge.
