Ok, I have to strongly disagree. Ooooh, go to a pow wow for college credit. Yeah, whatever. I am that culture, and spent time on reservations. They are not more attuned, really. 80% alchoholic, maybe they're just seeing double. The Lakota used to heard buffalos over cliffs, kill whole heards. Left massive trash dumps around the continent. Brutally waged war, just like the Europeans, with less success, only because they did'nt have the technology.
The only thing cool about pow wows, are Indian tacos. Pows wows, real ones, not the hippies sponsered Cali types, are a bunch of people sitting in silence. They are a bit shy, which gives them the mystical rep. I guess Swedes are mystics too. As for 2012, they wrote their calender on stone, they just ran out of carving space.
First off, in regard to going to the pow wow for college, we had to choose a different culture from our own and attend an event pertaining that culture- I wasn't 'forced' to go to a pow wow to attain credit I decided that the NA culture was somewhat intriguing (this was several years ago, before I actually knew more about them), so decided to attend a pow wow, where a Navajo Code Talker was present. Now, being military myself as well as my husband, we thought that was something that not everyone would have the chance to partake in, and that was the main reason we went. Yes, there were 'touristy' things there, but for us, we took more away from it than just stuffing ourselves w/ Indian bread and turquios necklaces. We, honestly, were moved by the various ceremonies they performed... one in which an eagle feather fell onto the floor from one's regalia and they did this whole thing regarding that sacred feather. We thought it was neat... just our opinion
Jump ahead several years to now, and I have a somewhat skewed idea regarding the NA culture. Being in WA state, and living somewhat close to 'the Res' as people up here call it, I have firsthand accounts of the horrible lives they live. I have seen how they treat their environment (trash everywhere, dumpy living conditions, etc) as well as their pets... they don't believe in/can't afford?/whatever proper care for their pets, but yet come in to the vet clinic smelling like a brewery... trust me, there are things that will piss you off to no end.
And before people get their panties in a wad, no I'm not stereotyping the/your culture... this is just what I've seen....
kinda sad, actually

Yeah, it's a tough job being on top of the food chain, but someone's gotta do it.

So......about a year later when everyone's homes are in foreclosure from the extra spending, I'm going to buy something real nice.....
LOL. I bought the place I'm living on now for a REAL good price, including a ton of stuff I didn't pay anything for (extra huge propane tanks, 2,500 gal water storage tank for the main water well, redundant wells, generator for the house, etc. etc.) because the guy I bought it from was all ready for Y2K and when nothing happened he was bummed and decided he didn't really want to live out in the country after all.
