OT: Photography Thread

I know there are a handful of photogs on the forum that might want to discuss general photography (gear or techniques). Let's discuss them here.

If you are new to photography, feel free to chime in with quetions. It's a great lifelong hobby.

Canon Releases NEW products

Digital Rebel XSi

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi

Quote:
For stunning photography with point-and-shoot ease, look no further than Canon's EOS Rebel XSi. The EOS Rebel XSi brings staggering technological innovation to the masses. It features Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System, Live View Function, a powerful DIGIC III Image Processor, plus a new 12.2-megapixel CMOS Sensor and is available in a kit with the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens with Optical Image Stabilizer. The EOS Rebel XSi's refined, ergonomic design includes a new 3.0-inch LCD monitor, compatibility with SD and SDHC Memory cards and new accessories that enhance every aspect of the photographic experience.
EF 200mm f/2L IS USM

EOS (SLR) Camera Systems - Telephoto - Telephoto Lens - EF 200mm f/2L IS USM - Canon USA Consumer Products

Quote:
This ultra-fast telephoto, a new member of Canon legendary L-series lenses, has totally new optics to provide better image quality. It uses fluorite and UD lens elements for excellent chromatic aberration correction and consists of 17 elements in 12 groups. The built-in Optical Image Stabilizer gives it up to 4 stops of stabilization correction. The inner USM and optimized AF algorithms result in fast and quiet autofocusing, and the circular aperture can even produce beautiful out-of-focus images. This ultra-high-performance lens also improves its durability - better dust- and water-proofing. The EF 200mm f/2L IS USM is outstanding for many available-light applications, including indoor sports, theater work, fashion, and candids at events.
EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM

EOS (SLR) Camera Systems - Super Telephoto - Super Telephoto Lens - EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM - Canon USA Consumer Products

Quote:
This is the longest telephoto lens among Canon's lineup, and a terrific choice for any long-distance application-outdoor sports, wildlife, news photojournalism, and so on. It's actually lighter than Canon's EF 600mm f/4L IS lens, weighing just under 10 lbs. It uses a refined optical design, with two fluorite lens elements, one UD element, and one Super-UD-glass element, for outstanding correction of color fringing and superb contrast and sharpness. This super-telephoto lens uses magnesium-alloy barrel construction to enhance its light weight, and has weather-resistant gaskets throughout for use in harsh conditions. It's compatible with both the EF 1.4x II and 2x II tele extenders for even more reach: EOS cameras with 45 AF points will continue to provide autofocus at the center AF point when the lens is used with the 1.4x extender. Finally, it's image stabilized, providing up to 4 stops of correction for camera shake. This makes it even more practical in many situations.

Re: OT: Photography Thread

I like doing IR work. I converted a Nikon D70 to do IR only. A lot faster then the old school way with light meters and external filters. Auto focus works, internal metering works. Makes IR so much easier and more enjoyable.
I also have an unmodified D200 which my wife and I love so much, so much control and awesome results. Lots of glass too, but not sure if I should list.

Sample I've never experimented with IR but I appreciate the results I've seen.

If I started all over....I would be a D200 shooter. I've always liked the specs on that one. I can't believe how fast manufacturers are replacing gear. the Canon 40D came out about a year after the my 30D. The Nikon D300 replaced the D200 quickly as well. The Canon Xti has just been replaced also.

Re: OT: Photography Thread

I use a pair of Nikon D200s and a set of Nikkor glass including the 70-200 2.8 VR and 17-55 2.8. Couple SB800s speedlights, an SU800 and a SB600. At times I work with a very basic and compact mobile studio setup that runs off the hardwired inverter I installed in the FJ. And I believe in quality support, so I use a Gitzo G1325 carbon fiber tripod with an Arca Swiss ball head. Last summer for kicks I cut down a sapling on a hike in the smoky mountains and turned it in to a walking stick/monopod with a manfrotto 3232 tilt head on top and a non-slip grip below it.

When it comes to upgrading, I always skip a generation. So no D300 for me. I'll wait for a bigger jump in MP to get more bang for my buck with the D400 or D4x

Re: OT: Photography Thread

Nikon D200 here. My main lens 70-200VR and the 17-55. Also I also use Tamorn 11-18 for wide angle. I also have a 17-200VR for when i need to save weight. Various prime lenses which I dont use much anymore.

I would like to get in IR photo and think about converting a used D70 to do it.

Swicargo did you have it done somewhere or did you do it yourself?

Pokerdawg, that 800mm must be a monster! Any pics you can share with that lens?

I don't think he has one.

New Canon Lenses - EF 200/2L IS USM and EF 800/5.6L IS USM

That is a real specialty lens. I have had a 600 f4 Nikon for a long time. I used to use it to take Wildlife Photos, with slide film, no less. It gave me a little edge because many wildlife photographers had the 500 f4 Nikons.

You have to carry along a monster tripod with it also. That is why I had my wife go with me.. lol

I hardly ever use it now.

Re: OT: Photography Thread

Right now I have a D40 that I'm allowing this country to tear up. It's not doing too bad. Two lenses 18-55 and 70-200.

When I get back home I'm getting a D300 and 18-200 VR lens. Probably will also purchase a SB-800 speedlight.

Tonight I ordered a Sandisk Extreme IV 4 GB CF card with firewire reader. 144-60 main in rebate (Adorama).

When I purchase the D300 I'll get a 10% military discount from Ritz. 1600 bucks for a D300 isn't bad.

Re: OT: Photography Thread

Filters
I have been using the cokin grad filter and they are pretty scatched up so looking to replace them.
What do you guys use? I am thinking of stocking the 1,2,3 stop is that a good combination?
