balut
Did you actually EAT the balut, TC? The first question that pops into mind is "why"? The second is how you actually got it down. I know that the chick's bones are jelly by the time they ferment to that extent, but... damn.

My strange thing is Sambal Rat, but it's not that strange. Live octopus, but it's not that strange. Fermented mare's milk, but it's a beverage, not a meal. Snake but who hasn't? I'm just too sheltered.

It reminds me of the story about the cannibal who 'passed' his friend in the jungle.

Re: Strangest things you've Eaten

I am always up for something unusual when I travel

Warthog (in the top 5 of tasty things I've ever had)
Gazelle
Mopani Worms (really a caterpiller)
Cape Buffalo

Guinea Pig (the NASTY tasting thing ever)
Coca Tea (yep its what you think and very tasty)

Rattlesnake
Caribou
Musk Ox
Alligator
Kangaroo

I left out the local stuff like elk etc and I'm sure I forgot something

Had some taco's in San Felipe that had some "Mystery" meat in them.
Alligator, Emu, rattle snake at a wild game feed at Lake Irvine a couple years ago.

Re: Strangest things you've Eaten

Larry, I'm with you. I think I'm a sort of adventurous eater but not after reading some of these posts!

However, in the spirit of things, I'll add my group to the list. Prefaced with this: when I travel anywhere, I do my best to eat the regional cuisine.

Fried Green Tomatoes (Charleston, SC) - awesome, actually!

Alligator (Florida) - don't need to repeat that one

Green Chili (my house prepared by my teammate, Alfred, from Colorado) - repeat every chance I get but so far his was the best

Elk (Angel Fire, NM) - where can I get this daily?? Yummy

Canned peaches, Mango, Nutella, ice cubes, a splash of cold milk, honey, olive oil, etc etc. (somewhere in Illinois) (that last one was from Dragon's description of a recipe I think...I hope?)

Re: Strangest things you've Eaten

THREAD HIJACK -- What won't you eat?

Fried grasshoppers aren't bad -- but I don't eat guts. I draw the line at "guts". I know that sausage has intestine around it and that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about entrails - fish guts, pig guts, cow guts. Guts are in my No-Fly Zone.
