Kinder, gentler, John McCain thread...

You are hereby admonished to not engage in personal name calling or attacks in this thread! I and others used the now closed John McCain thread to exchange information and discuss facts related to the Presidential Candidacy of John McCain. So far as I know, there is nothing in the forum rules that prevents political discussion in the Off-Topic Discussion area. If you don't like this thread, don't join in. If you don't like what someone has posted here, ignore it or present your arguments with facts, not personal attacks. The mod that closed the John McCain thread was correct in doing so and I'm sure will do the same in this one if it degrades.

I am coming around to considering supporting John McCain based upon the evidence that relative to other politicians, he always keeps his word about his opinions on specific issues. Even though he has supported more liberal policies and legislation in the past, his current platform is conservative.

Should I believe him?

If he hasn't given you reason to think otherwise, then believe him. It's what you're comfortable with is all that matters.

I like the idea of a more central candidate, the other two options that present themselves now are way too extreme, and a combo of both on a ticket is very polarizing. I will keep watching...

I'd vote for him if i had good enough reasons, too. I don't know a whole lote about McCains platform. Having served in the military is not a good enough reason to be elected (obviously it didn't help Kerry beat Bush in 04). So, as the OP said, back up your statement with some FACTS.

Re: Kinder, gentler, John McCain thread...

He's going to find out the hard way in the general election that the left-wing media is not really his friend, nor are many of the Democrats who's favor he has curried in the past. Perhaps it will help him figure out where his real loyalties lie and work to propose legislation that is important to the people who help get him elected, should he wind up being victorious. I'll certainly be paying close attention to what he says from now until the election.

Though I do respect and admire McCain for his service and what hell he went through in the service of his country, I agree that it isn't enough to base a vote on. I heard late last night that he has indicated that he has heard the "people" about securing the borders, but damnit, he hasn't given up on the virtual amnesty for illegal immigrants. I predict that if he's elected, he will ramrod another bill similar the the McCain - Kennedy Immigration Bill through a liberal congress - remember, even if they lose, Obama and Hillary will still be there...

This is a pretty big issue for me and McCain doesn't come down on the conservative side of this issue by any stretch of the immagination.

Re: Kinder, gentler, John McCain thread...

The big question is this: Who is the best choice? Right now, it sure appears that there are three viable candidates. I often have held hope that Mitt Romney would jump back in on an independent ticket, but that would just pull votes from McCain and lead whoever is on the Democratic ticket down the red carpet and into the White House.

So........where does that leave us? To vote for McCain and as a general population hold him to conservative values? I'm just very afraid of the upcoming Democratic ticket......
