Keep us posted in case you need some more recruits for the fire watch shifts. Nothing like stumbling into a yard thinking you're gonna peek at some tail only to get ambushed by a squad of angry toyota owning former marines with a penchant for rendering people useless.

hehehe, not to poke fun at this serious situation but it would be pretty cool (or maybe just amusing to me) to put up a wood spiked fence with watch towers at each corner . . . like the frontier forts
LOL, that would be cool! We have vaulted ceilings and high gables on the ends of house, wife wasn't impressed when I wanted to install a turret up in the gable though! Maybe now I can convince her, hmmmm.

Sort of along the same lines, and a nod to the instance of letting a few roungs loose:
I used to work for a hunting and fishing store. Naturally, we had a few cops as customers in the gun dept., and there take on shooting a "bad guy" was to always make sure he was in your house (if he wasn't, drag him in), and make sure if you shot him - you shot to kill and succeeded.
The problem seemed to be that the "perp", whether stealing from you or not, managed to be able to use the system to say you attacked/assaulted or otherwise and "Joe Homeowner" ends up in prison for assault with a deadly weapon.

If I catch him, who says they'll ever hear about what happened to him at all? Alligator country makes for easy body disposal.

Know a guy who thought he had a peeper he could hear wandering around his yard, but could never catch, so he took his backhoe a dug a 10' deep trench in his backyard, in the middle of the night he heard all this noise and went outside and found a very un-happy coyote and two skunks all having an altercation in his "pervinator" trap! He had to make a special ladder so they could get out. Lights are your best defense and the plus side is you have more shooting light!!!!

I like the paintball idea. Pepper spray... less lethal force on a peeping tom would be good in my book...
Most of the pepper spray I see these days has not only the capsicum, but mace and a UV-reactive dye as well so that cops can ID the perp positively later. Seems like a great idea would be to put that same mix - capsicum, mace & UV dye - into a paintball-like casing and have it fired from a shotgun for more accuracy and range than a paintball gun can typically deliver. Between the noise, pain and fear, it would make a decent one-step-shy-of-lethal solution.

I am all for spin's suggestion because I am terrified of shooting the wrong person. That fear is worse than the fear of having an incident without a weapon on me.
I think if I was in a real situation with real bullets I would hesitate because of this, unfortunately.
