Plasma or LCD TV?

So last night I went out and bought a 42' plasma tv. (No more mods for a while I'm afraid) I'm moving out of my corporate apt at the end of the month, so that's when I'll pick it up. Looking online today, I found it cheaper somewhere else, so I have to go back and get the difference today. My question, is one better than the other? I remember when plasmas first came out, there were a lot of problems, but I understand they have greatly improved. I'm wondering if I should trade it in, or keep it...

So what do yall think?

Re: Plasma or LCD TV?

It depends on what exactly you want in a tv and whether or not you'll be gaming. I believe one is better than the other in that aspect, but I can't remember which one.

Here's an article to help you start off

^ bet me to it... yes, you can play games on a plasma (i do, PS3 and Wii) but its not the BEST. I run my xbox360 on my rear projection.

Nate:

Plasma....it has darker "blacks" for a better picture quality especially when you get into 1080p. Although LCD is rapidly catching up.

Re: Plasma or LCD TV?

I'm not an expert but from what I understand they each have their advantages.

Plasmas offer truer blacks, less ghosting and a brighter picture. They are better for movies and sports however they can be susceptible to burn-in and I wouldn't recommend them for video games.

LCDs don't weigh as much, run cooler and are better for video games.

My dad just bought a 60" 1080p Pioneer plasma and the thing is incredible. Absolutely amazing picture.

Re: Plasma or LCD TV?

I'm just kinda a freak for the big Sony Bravia LCDs.

Terrific contrast and not nearly the amount of screen reflection of a large plasma.

Re: Plasma or LCD TV?

Like others have said, it depends on what you will use it for and the location you are putting the TV.

As for cost, it is typically cheaper to go Plasma when getting a TV 40" or bigger. Of course this threshold is changing daily as the cost of LCD TVs comes down.

Re: Plasma or LCD TV?

Thanks! I have a ps2, but I hardly ever play it. I'm considering a Wii since they came out with Mario Cart Racing...

I mostly watch cable. Movies every now and then.

What about sound? I also got a surround sound, but personally I don't think the type of tv will make a difference in sound...

Re: Plasma or LCD TV?

I thought plasma had darker blacks. I think the consensus is that overall plasma has the slight edge in picture quality.

Things you should consider are size/cost ratio... plasmas are definitely cheaper as you go bigger in screen size. However from an industry stand point I believe manufacturers are putting more emphasis on lcd technology and I read somewhere that eventually many of these companies will drop their plasma lines and go strictly with LCD. It's similar to the blueray vs hd-dvd debate. We now see that blueray has won out and I believe LCD's will eventually win out as well.

Another thing to consider is what others have mentioned. The burn-in effect for plasmas is still an issue if you're playing games and watching shows with perm logos on the bottom of the screen ie... cnn, mtv, etc. The burn-in is not perm however, but its still annoying.

As for manufacturers I tend to prefer Samsung for the quality and value. Sony just made a huge deal with samsung to share their LCD plant so essentially many of the Sony tvs will be sharing the same lcd's with samsung. LG also makes some nice tvs.

Hope that helps.

Re: Plasma or LCD TV?

Just bought a 42" Vizio LCD. Apparently Plasma can't be fixed if one of the mirrors/glass pieces inside craps out, or so I was told. If it can be fixed it's major surgery. Also, LCD weigh a lot less.
I'm amazed by the picture quality.
