I lost more in home value last year than I paid for my FJ

Ouch!!! I bought a house near Orlando last year for just under $200K. According to Zillow I've lost almost 20% of my home's value since then! That a decrease of ~$40K, more than I paid for my favorite toy.

You really gotta wonder about us people in FL and CA huh?

Re: I lost more in home value last year than I paid for my FJ

I just looked t my house on zillow.com and my house is worth -1526.15. That means that I would have to pay you to buy my house if I was to sell it. And I live in a pretty well to do neighborhood. Sux man.

ZILLOW SUCKS ASS!

I'd base what you think your losses are on comps in your area and not that crappy home value internet site.

Besides, you haven't lost anything until you decide to sell anyway.

Re: I lost more in home value last year than I paid for my FJ

Although it's not guaranteed accurate, and you have to look past all the ads n stuff, I've found Zillow to be within 5-10% of actualt comps in the 2 areas where I've been involved in home buying / selling. My own home in central Florida and my Mom's home in N. Dallas area. At least the values went up a little bit in N.DFW locations.

Anyone wanna buy a 3 br, 2 bath, 2 car garage house in The Colony TX area? lol

So .... by waiting to buy you have saved enough to offset what you spent on the FJ huh? Thats a great justification for more mod-money!

Re: I lost more in home value last year than I paid for my FJ

CNNMoney just did a page on best markets in the US and B'ham AL was 3rd best. Up 2.9% last year. Our market is holding firm. I would be pissed if mine droped 20%.

Re: I lost more in home value last year than I paid for my FJ

I was in Real Estate in the Seattle market for many years. In the Pacific North West Zillow.com can be 20-40% off. Unless you live in an area where the tax records are kept VERY UP TO DATE, zillow.com will be wrong. Only by looking on a real estate site and comparing your home to others in your area will you get an accurate value.

If you really want to know what the market value is, contact a couple of local experienced Realtors(not a newbie) and have them do a market evaluation. It should be free, and then afterwards you can just let them know you have changed your mind.

Re: I lost more in home value last year than I paid for my FJ

by my estimates, my house has lost around 100K (~20%) since its peak in 2006. fortunately, i bought in 2002. although, for selfish reasons, i'm rooting for housing to continue to tank in my area so we can move up to a larger house, and use our existing one as rental/income property.

Re: I lost more in home value last year than I paid for my FJ

The market is bad all over being from Michigan we have no choice but to hold out for a recovery. We are fortunate in the fact that we both have decent jobs. Reality is despite the stock market you will do better putting your extra money into a 401K than housing. The days of those $100 Grand bumps in home values are gone for awhile.

I look at the long term tax deductions, and the fact that we enjoy our home. That is going to have to do for now.
