I'd like to toast the inventor of the stock radio antenna inventor. That person just saved me a few hundred dollars in repairs...
Vacationing in Scottsdale, heading home, I run into construction traffic on the 10. Winds are blowing hard, and everyone is pretty tightly grouped, though moving at a good clip.
Ahead in the distance, a semi kicks up a piece of fiberboard about 1 foot by 2 foot. This should not be a problem, but the wind was feeling jeeky. A few false attempts for gravity to win, but the wind took control and made this board into a flying guillotine.
I watched a few cars miss the frisbee of death, and gawked to see who would be the poor sucker to take the hit. Nobody else was elected but me.
Coming at me like a sugar juiced kid swinging a ouija board, the piece of scrap homed in on the passenger side of the FJ. Windshield penetration was a real concern because of the mass, and the perfect angle. No time to react, I tried a valiant attempt to move it with my hands from the inside. My telekinesis failed me this time.
Really big loud bang, no windshield breakage, the passenger side mirror looked inwards for a moment, and the deed was done. Decided to continue on another hundred miles before I would look at the pillar to see the carnage. Drove for an hour thinking about how much that would cost.
I had the worst spotty radio reception for the next hour. Cursed the Phoenix area for crappy transmitters, until I stopped for gas.
Radio antenna snapped clean off from the hit, and saved the pillar, windshield, and side mirror. Big piece of engineered wood, and a little antenna deflected it enough to save me a lot of damage. Thank you antenna, and the guy that designed it.
If you see an antenna in Phoenix on the side of the 10, that's mine.
