We had a new mall open and women complaining that the Victoria's Secret photos were too big. Some of these women made a huge deal out of it.
I just wish these women would realize their men look at chicks anyway. Taking away or shrinking the VS photos at the mall isn't going to do a stinking thing.
It's not the men that women worry about so much--at least not the ones with decent self-esteem; the real issue is the exposure to the kids--young, impressionable girls especially.
Young girls' self-esteem suffers as they are constantly exposed to sexual ads (similar to the VS ones you mentioned) via TV, magazines, billboards, and even certain toys--they are subconsciously hammered with the idea that they have to be thin, have perfect skin, perfect hair, wear the "right" clothes, etc. It sets them up for all kinds of issues, not just eating-disorders. It can affect them both physically and mentally and give them a skewed view of sex and affect their sexual development.
That's not to say that it's healthy for young boys to be exposed to it either; supposedly there is a porn-additiction epidemic that has swept the nation, and I've even known a few guys who suffer from it. A little porn is one thing; it's another when you end up unable to perform because your wife/gf/so isn't hot enough--and you'd be surprised at the numbers, it's a bit shocking.
So I can understand the reasoning behind it; it's one thing for adults to go and patronize the place, but it's entirely another to allow kids in or around there.
Re: This government intrusion has hit too close to home
Jag,
Victoria's Secret is in about every mall in America and has been for quite some time. So now the photos are bad?
I see girls and their very own mother's running around the stores just about as naked as the ads. While I don't feel it is appropriate dress for myself or for kids..........people see a lot more skin on a day at the beach.
If VS is so bad......maybe people should have cared before they opened stores in just about every mall in America.
While a prude myself.....I found myself around a lot naked people at parties and on beaches in Europe and honestly......they all seemed to have a much healthier outlook on nudity than in our culture.

I don't think that the photos are bad and certainly I'm not saying that VS is the problem--they sell lingerie, they have a legitimate reason to use the pictures they use, and I think it is ridiculous that people would get bent about that. I don't think anyone really has a problem with VS itself, just that it's overkill with the imagery--they have such brand presence that they really don't need show models in lingerie--and I would even argue that they sell more regular clothing and pajamas than they do intimate apparel--so why not put images of models in the more modest of the three? They don't because "sex sells."
But really, the issue isn't VS. It's the photos similar to VS that are everywhere--on buses, on billboards, TV, on the magazine racks in the grocery store--the imagery is literally everywhere for nearly every product out there--soda, fragrance, clothing, shoes, shampoo, deodorant--even milk, with those "got milk?" ads. We've become so desensitized to it that many of us don't even realize it or really "see" it, it's been around for so long. Remember Diet Pepsi's commercial in 1981 with the girl in the swimsuit and hat covering her eyes sucking the drink through a straw with red lips? My 1 1/2 year old male cousin would stop whatever he was doing when the music came on so he could watch--mesmerized. The marketing reps aren't stupid--sex sells, we all agree on that. The issue isn't really even that sex sells; the issue is that it's used to sell everything, everywhere--it's too much. Sex being used to sell espresso? I'm not so closed-minded that I can't see both sides: I can see both the brilliance and the folly in it; I would say, "fine, great, do what you want, but don't make it visible to the kids." They should make it 18+.
I'm certainly not an advocate for abolishing every sexy image out there--I've had to do photo-shoots for DJing and I wear somewhat sexy outfits when I play (vinyl pants and corsets, etc.), so how much of a hypocrite would I be if I said, "ban the sex!!?" I'm not saying that; I'm saying that it's not appropriate for young eyes, and parents can only control so much of what their kids see--they can't control what they see when they're out doing daily errands and it's plastered everywhere. I'm just suggesting that too much of something can be a bad thing--too much food, too much alcohol, too much exposure to violence, and yes, too much exposure to sexually charged content is right up there as well.

Maybe if we just taught our kids to use the airbrush feature on PhotoShop so they could fix pictures of themselves and their friends, they wouldn't feel so bad looking at pics of the VS girls.
(Tongue in cheek. Please know I'm kidding.)
Seriously, I'm 44 and still wrestle with self-image. It's natural and no amount of protesting is going to eliminate sex from ads, TV, magazines, etc.
I have tried to tell my daughters (22 and 17) that their beauty inside is more important than the stuff on the outside.
Still, it's hard looking in the mirror these days knowing it's only going to go downhill from here.
Beats the alternative, however...

What genre do you spin? I know you have to be too young......but did you ever go to "The Works" before they closed?
If you did......you must have heard Marcus Schultz and the amazing techno he played every week-end.
Ahhhhhhh....you used to find me and my bestest girlfriend raving there every week-end with the lil kids.
I miss "The Works" the lil messed up raver kids and all my security guard BFs.
Buncha meatheads.
A friend and I were invited and did an all night stint selling Boba tea at a rave party a few months ago. Lol....it just isn't the same anymore.
Not that this place we line in was ever the hip epicenter for rave.

Re: This government intrusion has hit too close to home
So, just to be clear. Are many of you and others saying that body ideals such as those represented by the young ladies in this video are unrealistic and unhealthy for most females?
Re: This government intrusion has hit too close to home
No, silly! We're just jealous of those women. We'd look like them in a heartbeat!

I play nasty, evil, dark-a$$ tech-step and drum and bass. It makes me happy.
And yes, I went to The Works--I did the after-hours thing for a while when I turned 18, and they were around for a while after my 21st b-day. I actually knew Markus and his wife Heather VERY well in those days--I spent a lot of time at their record store when it was on Central Ave, before they moved to Tempe. I was in the Desert West record pool they ran, and got a lot of pre-released music and white labels.
The "raves" that exist today are a shell of what we used to go to. There are only two or three "good" shows a year anymore, and one was this weekend in Tucson. I probably would have gone, but I had a birthday gathering to attend.
Sorry I didn't make it to the game tonight--I had a couple of gatherings to attend and ended up spending more time than I wanted at one of them at the request of a friend. It killed the possibility of me getting to the game at a decent time, especially with the 101 closures coming out of Chandler.

Way cool!
I think tech-step and drum and bass may be a bit hardcore for me, but I will have to come check it out anyway. Happy hardcore is definitely way too hardcore for me. (Or is drum and bass more junglie? You called it masty, evil, dark so I am assuming it is on a happy hardcore annoying like level.)
I hope Marcus did something with his talent. I loved when he worked the place. After hours was the best!
I heard he went to Europe or the UK to play and had always hoped he did well.
Yeah......sucks you missed the game, but only because it was a bit boring and I could have used some entertainment.
Heh! But your hunny scored!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The old guys kicked the lil kid's (one was even 13 !!!!!!!!! years old) arses.
Except........... the kids were playing two men .........(errrrrrr boys) down.
Still, way cool that your hunny scored!
