Canon's new EOS 50D bridges the gap between the novice and the seasoned pro with a perfect combination of high-speed and quality. It features an APS-C sized 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor for tremendous images, new DIGIC 4 Image Processor for fine detail and superior color reproduction, and improved ISO capabilities up to 12800 for uncompromised shooting even in the dimmest situations. It features a refined 3.0-inch Clear View LCD (920,000 dots) monitor, supercharged Live View Function with Face Detection Live mode, plus a number of new automatic Image Correction settings and HDMI output for viewing images on an HDTV. Pick up the EOS 50D and you'll experience true digital inspiration!

Ehh..I'll hold out for a full-frame 5D. I've heard rumors of a cheaper version of the 5D to be released.
The only thing I like about this new 50D is the high ISO but nothing else.
Camera bodies come out every 6 months or so and don't hold their value. I say invest in some quality L lenses and keep your 30D.
The 40D and 50D have features my 30D is serious lacking so I wouldn't mind upgrading. MP is not a big deal to me. I've never printed over 11x17 and those come out well for my 8mp gear.

I know nothing about cameras, but Dan wants the Nikon D40 or the D80.
I don't know Nikons but I've played with a D80. It's nice camera. If you are a casual shooter that wants anything better than a point and shoot, the D40 should do well mated to a really good lens. D80 will of course have a better sensor, more features, and greater durability. Never forget the importance of a good lens.

The ISO sounds nice, but all the rest is just extra for lazy people who do not shoot in manual mode. Lazy people should just stick with point and shoots.
I'll stick to my D200 and D70IR, until the D700(FX) is at an affordable range.

I agree with this but its always hard to know when to upgrade.
My 30D works great and I've only got 2 L series lenses (70-200 and 24-70) but my wife never understand why I'm buying lenses worth as much or more than the camera...

For me, I'm looking for a full frame, so thats easy enough for me to know when to upgrade. I could care less about all the other bells and whistles like 'flex capacitor self cleaning modulators' that they seem to be putting into newer bodies. Problem is 5D is flipping $$$. I guess it's all about knowing what you 'need' to create images you are going for.
I've got a 24-105L and wish I got a 24-70 instead. I have a 70-200L f4 that I hardly use and looking to trade for a 17-40L.

Lazy people? I like technical improvements....but I don't do not use automatic mode
