Re: 3G Cell Phones - I'm in the market

I go through phones like toilet paper after eating at the Sizzler. But I have been really happy with my Samsung 3g phone I guess it's the black jack. This phone has been bullet proof for me, for two years and not a thing wrong with it aside from the screen being a little worn. I recently got a smoking deal on an I Phone. I was kind of reluctant to switch after having my Samsung for so long and having no problems what so ever. Before this phones generally lasted me 6-9 months.

All that being said I love my new iphone it is the new 3G as well and seems twice as fast as my Samsung. I also can't say enough good things about the functions and the usability of this phone. It really is set up nice. I didn't think I would like the touch screen for texting and doing e-mails but I actually like it better now than my Samsung. I have heard rumors of how fragile these phones can be so I bought a protective rubber case and screen protectors. By far the coolest phone I have had.

I had the iphone (1st gen) but hated it and went back to my old samsung black jack. While the apps on the new iphone 3g is nice, I still prefer a non touch screen smart phone. Plus I use the black jack as a modem on my laptop when i'm out camping. (the iphone at the time wasn't 3g and couldn't/didn't know how to you it as my internet connection to my laptop.) But who knows, if really wanted to, I just might get a touchscreen phone but it would be a iphone hater type of phone. Theres just way better phones out there that beats the iphone hands down but you have to pay the price. The Nokia N96 is a good phone and has a powerful processor, the sony xperia x1 is a new phone also. Even the HTC touch pro looks good (sprint and verizon has the rights to this phone and is rebadged.) But then again you will have to pay top dollars to get one of these. Hope I helped you a little and just wanted to broaden you to more options.

Nokias have had my attention for a long time due to their ease, reliability, reception, OPENNESS (S60 is brimming with software), and features for the dollar. GPS, WIFI, second to none camera (3,5MP, though I believe samsung is the new leader with the 8MP camera), everything. So, Id recommend the N series, and E series such as the E71, E71x, N96, N95 8gb, N81, etc. But, the Sony X1 is looking mighty impressive for the dollar, even if its running the debatable winmo interface. Anything HTC is also very good. Then theres the iphone, which may be lacking in the features department, but certainly makes up for it in terms of ease and support (try taking some of the gray-market nokias for help... it isnt happening. Heck, even their store only models dont have support from ATT/T-mo).

Also, there is the superphone coming out by Sony Ericsson X1 Experia. That is supposed to really kick @$$.

hehe we think alike when it comes to phones
People always ask me: how can you spend $xxx on a phone, when I can get one for like $xx? I ask, how can you spend so much on your hair, clothes, shoes, etc when I can get them for cheap?

Im all about the features for the dollar. I may only use a particular shirt once a month, but I use my phone everyday. And I use 100% of the features everyday. So buying a phone for me isnt really about money (within reason), its about what features do you REALLY need (and maybe a few wants) at a price you can afford to pay. Plus, that X1 is one NICE phone... features for the dollar, its about spot on.

I was in the market for a smartphone for a long time. I had my eyes on the iphone, but after trying the google phone, it was a very easy choice. The google phone is AWESOME! Great interface, fast, and open source. It's also cheaper. The slideout keyboard is a blessing. There are so many great apps for it. You can also use wifi when it's available. I've gotten it for the wife, but now I'm using it whenever I can.
Tony thanks for reminding me about that phone. I need to check it out. So, are you telling me that it will act as a wifi gateway for my PC laptop? That is so cool. I could finally run Google Earth out in Anza Borrego!

Ok here we go with the wireless modem for the laptop again. WTF?! Are you telling me that I can use this thing as a wifi gateway for my PC? I know I just said the same frigging thing to Tony. Serious?!?!? That is saweeet.

There are no "iPhone Killers". Apple is the smartest company out there right now. I mean just look how all the others are following their lead.

Once you try apple products you are instantly hooked. Mac just knows how to make user friendly devices that are light years ahead of the game.

Re: 3G Cell Phones - I'm in the market

For S60 (read: mid to top end Nokia phones), they have a program Joiku - JoikuSpot Light . It is a wifi access point for your laptop, psp, another cellphone, etc, that uses you 3G signal to access the internet. Doesnt need a jailbreak on the phone either as nearly all Nokia phones are unlocked and "un-branded"--meaning that features on the phones are not deliberately turned off by the cell phone provider. Ill give credit to apple for the iphone, and it really is a nice device-- by far the most user intuitive and readily usable device--but really not for me...I like my cheap extra batteries and >3mp camera with 30fps video camera, and without specific monthly contract.
