Tony thanks for reminding me about that phone. I need to check it out. So, are you telling me that it will act as a wifi gateway for my PC laptop? That is so cool. I could finally run Google Earth out in Anza Borrego!
Ok here we go with the wireless modem for the laptop again. WTF?! Are you telling me that I can use this thing as a wifi gateway for my PC? I know I just said the same frigging thing to Tony. Serious?!?!? That is saweeet.
Yes indeed you can, as long as you get a cell signal you can use it in conjunction with your laptop. So saweet. You can do the same at home so since you might be paying a little more for the phone and unlimited service, you can actually cancel your home service and save 50 bucks.

Wait a minute mister. There is no way I'm canceling my DSL. LOL Or did you mean my land line?
For S60 (read: mid to top end Nokia phones), they have a program Joiku - JoikuSpot Light . It is a wifi access point for your laptop, psp, another cellphone, etc, that uses you 3G signal to access the internet. Doesnt need a jailbreak on the phone either as nearly all Nokia phones are unlocked and "un-branded"--meaning that features on the phones are not deliberately turned off by the cell phone provider. Ill give credit to apple for the iphone, and it really is a nice device-- by far the most user intuitive and readily usable device--but really not for me...I like my cheap extra batteries and >3mp camera with 30fps video camera, and without specific monthly contract.
I would like a 3mgpxl camera, a good web browser, and a wifi would be sweet too.
That's really all I must have. Adding the internet to my new phone will run me an extra 15shmeckles a month. If I have a wifi phone and use it with my laptop, it should work right? What am I really trying to say? Ok ok, will I have to pay extra to use the WIFI feature if I'm already paying 15 bucks a month for internet to my cell phone? lol hth and ty
the wifi on the phone runs off the wifi signal. the programs available like joiku can turn your wifi signal the other way around, so your laptop can connect to yout phone, like a dsl modem. The phone then uses its 3G signal, if you pay for the data plan, to access the net. So, you wont have to pay to use wifi, and you can surf the web on your phone like that just fine (and faster than 3G), but if you dont have a wifi signal, then you have the option of using the 3G cell signal for internet connection, for a monthly fee.
Another option is to get a decent phone, cheap but with some basic features you like (wifi, good camera, etc) without breaking the bank, then use another device like Nokia N810 Internet Tablet PDA reviews - CNET Reviews for internet browsing, car integration (stereo, GPS, etc). An iphone can do all this as well, so well, the options are certainly out there!
Wife has a G1, T-Mobile finally rolled 3G out in Denver this past weekend. When you have 3G it's awesome, I've had some issues with it switching back to Edge in non-3G areas and data speed, but we my have worked it out last night by switching to a newer SIM card (wife was still on her original SIM from 02). Took about an hour and a half to troubleshoot with data support, but today it's been a lot better. I imagine it will continue to improve as they get better 3G coverage.
Still haven't decided if she's going to keep it though, I should have a Storm next week and we may go that route for her too if she likes it.
Google Maps Street view on the G1 is awesome though...

Thanks for taking the time to break this down for me. I'm learning.
I'll be using ATT wireless formerly Cingular. I wonder if they have a data cap. I do know that it's 15 bucks/month for unlimited internet to the phone.
So ducky or anyone else, Do I need to have the wifi connection on the cell phone or can I still use the cell phone to provide the internet to my laptop? Total noob here I know.
I think what you are saying is that a phone with a wifi can take advantage of a hotspot and surf the web for free. right?
