Re: Tacoma.
Here's the deal, not to steal your thunder 83FJ60....
I towed a loaded down uhaul 683 miles with the bed of the truck TOTALLY full. Only took three trucks to move our entire house from Vegas to Meridian. One was a full size Expedition that sagged like an old woman's tits with it fully loaded, couldn't trailer for ****. So we moved the trailer over to my wife's F150, 4.2l sport - it was loaded not as heavy as the Taco and still couldn't really trailer for ****.
So... in my experience - having moved plenty of people in the last 9 months of Taco ownership. My only complaint is that the bed isn't as large as my 82 full size, long bed F150. But, since I get 3 times the gas mileage and it will go ANYWHERE I feel ballsy enough to take it - it has become the single best automotive purchase decision I have ever made in my life. I will not hesitate to drive it till it explodes then rebuild it and do it again.
I love everything about the truck except that I can't turn off the ABS. As soon as I figure out that hack and it's out of warranty - the truck is absolutely PERFECT. I wouldn't own anything else unless of course I could afford an extended cab, lifted, 4x4 turbodiesel F250. I don't think there is a manlier looking truck on the road except the F250. Everytime I see a new Taco it turns my head then brings a grin to my face realizing I'm sitting behind the wheel of one that actually sees dirt!
Get the 6 speed. It's hell in traffic, but an absolute blast on the open road. I don't think the statement that it's too small to haul and too weak to tow is even remotely accurate.
First, it will tow 6500lbs. That's a large boat, a small motorhome, or a full size 1970's Buick. That's plenty of tow capacity for me and damn near every other wannabe offroader I've ever met. Plus, with a payload of nearly 1500lbs, that's 3/4's of a ton. If your doing more than that regularly you need a superduty F250, dodge/chevy 2500 series anyway. For that kind of money you could have a Tacoma and a Scion. If your towing that kind of weight your not looking for it to have any serious offroad capability either. You're surely not dragging a 5th wheel up any of the trails you might considering bouncing your Tacoma up/down.
With Toyota reliability - despite what you have heard of grenaded rear-ends in the 05 models, these things are solid. I've logged more offroad miles in the first year of ownership than most of my Jeep buddies do in their rigs entire existance and the ride in my truck won't make you pee blood. Not something you can say of the Jeeps, even the Grand Cherokee.
So, give it a shot, man. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. I don't expect everyone to love it the way I do, but... I'm a loving guy, what can I say?
