I had originally been planning on a new 4wd Taco this summer, but when the FJ came out, I had a tough decision. Test drove both, the FJ won. I still have my Taco, and would like to have another one of these days.

The Great Percy was one of the early members of this forum and a FJ Cruiser fanatic. He lived in Las Vegas at the time (now Idaho), but was misled by the Toyota dealer he commited to purchase his FJ Cruiser. Percy wanted to be among the first to own one, he was a forum guru and FJ Junkie, but the local dealers were MSRP plus a couple thousand at that time. They wouldn't budge and honor the verbal deal to Percy. Percy was bummed about the tactics used to sell a new model vehicle, but got a great deal on the Tacoma (from another dealer). Here are his comments a few days after buying the Tacoma.
FJc > Taco > 4runner. Percy doesn't post much anymore, and I sure miss his style. Maybe he will come to Ouray next summer. Percy are you peeking in from time-to-time?

For a sport truck it is beautiful. It has great lines and power but it is not made as to be a "truck". No off-roading in it or hauling most likely but I am sure you could haul some stuff if you wanted. I would compare it to a Ford Lighting just smaller and a bit slower, better looking and more reliable.

Re: Tacoma.

Would it be able to haul a quad in the bed?

Re: Tacoma.

Your best bet for all things Tacoma are to check out the site over at TTORA. www.tacomaterritory.com

VERY knowledgeable and they will kill you if you don't use the search function.

I bought a taco instead of an FJ and I am very pleased with my decision. Yeah, I would have enjoyed the Torsen center diff, but when all was said and done I saved myself almost $10K by buying the TRD OffRoad Tacoma over the FJ. I still got a 6-speed manual, locking rear diff, and the added bonus of being able to turn off 4 wheel drive. Badass truck.

I've always been a full size kind of guy, but I won't look back. It's amazing the ability these trucks have.

I'm not a big fan of street trucks, but... I like the XRunner. Toyota is working on the supercharger, URD has one out that with the 7th injector kit and cold air intake is adding nearly 100 rwhp. With exhaust/headers/gears, I think you could probably smoke a Ford Lightening.

On hauling a quad, you would just have to try it out and see. Payload is 1500lbs on mine - almost half that at 875lbs for the XRunner, also the tow capacity is about half at 3500lbs for the XRunner. So, yeah, it's a hot little truck but it's just barely a truck because it has a bed and looks like one. It's really a sports car.

If it were my $25,000... I'd get the TRD OffRoad Tacoma with all the bells and whistles in an access cab with a 6 speed.

Oh wait... that's what I bought. They are GREAT trucks. Mine has been used as a TRUCK since I got it. Moved 3 people, including myself to Idaho. Logged nearly 1500 miles offroad. 3 or 4 road trips and I haven't even had it a year. It just begs to be driven and I love driving it.

Good luck. I don't know about Ouray yet. I'll keep checking in.

Percy

Re: Tacoma.

05-06 / current genre Tacoma Trucks = Terrific. Solid. Great.

Traded my 05 Taco for my FJ. At the time I was going to just trade my 05 access cab TRD 4wd for an 07 double cab TRD 4wd (new baby = need more seats). But when my dealer offered me to buy the 07 FJ for about the same price (27K range) as the Taco...I had trouble refusing, especially since just a few months before he was selling up at 37k and folks were paying!

Anyway, I love my FJ, but certainly would be just peachy happy go lucky with a Tacoma.

Re: Tacoma.

Love the Tacoma, owned one before. But if I was shopping today, I'd really have to look at the Frontier. Finish might not be as nice, but it runs and handles pretty good.
