Had a CJ-7 for a couple of years. Was awesome off-road, and was great... as a second vehicle. As soon as the divorce was final (she got the Acura), the CJ was gone in a month. No way I could handle that thing being my primary vehicle.
My FJ is the whole enchilada y caliente.
Well it is unfortunate! I have been a mechanic for Toyota for over 20 years and I also bought an FJ.....But ended up selling it...for a profit.... and buying a Jeep TJ for on and off-road use. It is amazing to me that a stock Rubicon with swaybar disconnects has 18 inches of front wheel travel! The FJ had a hypnotic-Bling factor that reeled me in. Super advanced technology and reliability to boot! Vision while Driving on or off-road was flat out dangerous! And for the 10k difference in price The TJ with slight modifications was a steal of a deal! The FJ can be driven by anyone with hardly any skills... The TJ needs major driving skills to keep it under control.. Maybe if they release a convertable FJ with staight-axles then I will switch back! But for the fun-factor, I am really enjoying this Jeeps capabilities compared to the FJ when driven off-road.. it is really hard to compare.. apples and oranges!
ForDRT, your TJ Rubicon does not have front sway discos. The aftermarket one is really a pain to use. Therefore, the '07 Rubi is really cool to have this. Jeep TJ does not have the safety features of the FJ or '07 Jeep JK, nor on-road comfort of either.
Cause the Jeeps, like the FJs, don't have heated seats either and someones just looking for the opportunity to point that out....again....then rush right off to the nearest Hummer dealer to take a beating!
I'm happy for where the FJ falls in buyer demographics. And 50,000 units isn't a bad start for the rig! Didn't Chrysler have a 400k car surplus --> 8 month overstock on their lots?
Not that it matters but currently DC has a 59,000 ordered units backlog for the JK's.
I agree that the Boobicon is a better off road vehicle. On road you get to really see those (.)(.) bounce, but I just don't want to piss blood when I get to work because of the crappy ride quality. I want a truck that I can enjoy on road as much as off. Also, I used to have respect for Petersons, but to even consider a Kia Sorento as a 4x4, wtf is up with that? I know they do well in the class they are in at Baja, but that isn't anything close to a stock Kia. And I think they gave the award to the VW Touareg two years ago, that was about the time I stopped reading that magazine. Why would you need heated seats in an off road vehicle along with air adjustable suspension? I'm guessing the company that paid the most for advertising throughout the year got extra points on the score cards. And why was the GM turn out so high? They had 5 different trucks there and they still couldn't pull it off. How come there weren't any land rovers in the testing? I bet they would be top of the list as well. I'll stick with my Toyota because I will still have it in 10 years and I won't have to completely rebuild the whole truck like you would if you got a jeep.
No surprise there...but if I wanted a full-time off-road vehicle that handled like crap, I'd recommend something used and slightly abused to play with.
Best bet for Jeeps is to buy it used in a couple years. Save a ton of money. Same could be said of all vehicles, but Jeeps are a dime a dozen. If you want something your going to keep around, well...most of us made the right decision.
