Peterson's just arrived today... there on the cover - 4x4 of the Year. I am not surprised the FJ didn't win (would've been surprised if it didn't place near the top) but I am surprised the Rubicon beat it. Other than off-road, the Rubicon, well, sucks. Oh, I'm a Jeep guy. I have two now and both see trail use. So I love seeing Jeeps do well. But come on.
Before settling on the FJ (looked at everything before) as my next car (I've had enough of Jeep's poor quality), I drove the 4-door JK. It rode like crap - it's loud, slow, rough, stops like crap, handles like crap... I was really (!) disappointed. Before the test drive, I thought "This is going to be my next car..." Ironically, I drove the FJ thinking "This will probably ride like the JK... and I can cross this one off the list". NOPE! It was quite, fast, smooth... well - you know!
And those guys say they consider all facets of a truck... not just off-road. Yeah, sure guys.
Consumer Reports supposedly didn't like it for whatever reasons they had. Now Peterson's has their list of why they don't like it. So be it. I'm very happy with mine, don't want a Jeep, (Any more) don't want an Acura luxury SUV (Or whatever won in Consumer Report) I got what I wanted; a Black Cherry Toyota FJ Cruiser with a manual transmission. And I have no regrets!

I can understand the reasoning. As for strickly a off-road beast, the Rubicon is hard to beat. Petersons is an off-road magazine after all.
I would not be worried however. Owning both a Wrangler and a FJC I will tell you it would be a hard decision as to which one I would own if I could only have one. I mean the Wrangler is such a beast off-road, but has no use on-road, and the FJC is has so much to offer in both areas.
Given the actual wheeling ability of the average owner, the FJC should take the comparison, but given potential, the Rubicon is a better 4x4.

C'mon guys, this is GOOD news. Just helps to keep us more exclusive. I like it that we are in a small minority.

Rubicon is awesome. Just too purpose built for my tastes. Unfortunately most of my miles are on-road and the truck is a compromise for me.... thankfully not enough of a compromise to please the Consumer Reports stroller toting crew.
I'm happy for where the FJ falls in buyer demographics. And 50,000 units isn't a bad start for the rig! Didn't Chrysler have a 400k car surplus --> 8 month overstock on their lots?

Agree 100%. The 2007 Rubicon is the best off-road vehicle from the factory...you can't argue with it's running gears off-road...nothing on earth after 2006 (end of Hummer H1) can come close to the off-road equipment of the Rubicon. Like Highbeams, this does not mean much except for the hardcore off-roaders. FJC is by far the better vehicle all-around. Everything has a compromise...each manufacturer chooses what it compromises.

The Rubicon IS the better 4x4. Now if Peterson were giving out an all around off roader award, it would be a different story.
The Rubi isn't really an on road vehicle (I don't think any of my former Jeeps were). The fact that it has a solid axle with a front locker and a 4:1 T-case puts it worlds ahead of everyone else in.
If I remember correctly, (I haven't read Petersons in a few years) their test doesn't include a drag strip and a slalom course.
