Re: FJ40 owners/fans-what's a decent 40 go for?

The 40's listed are a lot more expensive than the one I saw-I guess a 5K 40 is not a good idea as it probably has a lot of hidden problems. I giess it would be better to get the FJC when my buying time comes up and save the project for later when I have more time and money.

Re: FJ40 owners/fans-what's a decent 40 go for?

Yet another opinion...

The 2F is a great engine. When I got it with at least 140k miles on it and used it to pull stumps, then drove it for 10 years. I did a top end rebuild on it a few years back, very easy to work on. So much room in the engine compartment you could almost stand in there with the engine.

Now that I have the FJC, I'm doing a frame off on it. I hope to do more after this one. I would stick to something old enough that you don't need to worry about emissions. I don't have disk brakes and power steering, but it was never a real problem for me.

The biggest issue (IMHO) is the frame. Everything else can be fixed/replaced.

I paid $3k for mine, almost stock, desmogged, with a hard and soft top and 4 new steel doors. It needed a carb and exhaust. That was about 10 years ago, but the prices haven't seemed to change much. Deals pop up as much as guys looking to rip you off.

You will be constantly tweaking it/replacing stuff, but that's part of the fun.

It's basically a tank. I wouldn't trade it for anything (except maybe another one).

Not necissarily. Like others have said anything cosmetic can be repaired. I had a 1970 that I had blasted down to the metal, anything that was rusted I had replaced and a beautiful new paint job for 4k. I think I paid 6k for the rig in the first place. The front fenders are a no brainer, you can buy brand new ones from Spectre Off-Road as well as many other OEM parts and just swap them out. In my opinion an FJ40 of ANY year is a great rig, AND a great investement. When I sold mine I easily made more more $$ than I put into it. Best of luck, and I hope you get one.

Re: FJ40 owners/fans-what's a decent 40 go for?

On a similar note, my dad nexteled (is that a word) me this mornign on his way to work and said there is a FJ55lg for sale on the side of the road in Beaufort, SC. He is going to take some pics on his way home.

I am going to be honest, I have never seen one of these. For the much more knowledgeable people on the boards... are these really rare, and/or were they just unpopular. To be honest they have the kind of face that so ugly it looks good. I will throw some pics up when I get them.

Both. Available in fairly limited quantities, grossly underpowered compared to their American counterparts of the day, and expensive in comparison as well.

Prone to serious rust issues, pristine examples are very hard to come by.

Big, bulky, rusty and ugly pretty much sums it up.

I'd like to have one someday myself...

Chris- they don't call it "The Original Iron Pig" for nothing! I think I have may have seen that FJ55 several years ago when I was in Beaufort on business-they kind of stick out. There was also a business (realty-I think) that had two very nice FJ-40s parked behind their building right near Mango's on Bay St.
