ID a truck in The Bourne Supremacy

No, not the Mercedes G-series in the Moscow chase scene.

Does anyone know what kind of SUV is used in the Gao, India chase scene at the beginning of the film, the one that ends up driving off of a bridge?

There are a couple of moments where you can freeze-frame on the logo on the front of the rig but I don't recognize the logo at all. It looks like something Suzuki would make but the logo doesn't seem right for that.

Re: ID a truck in The Bourne Supremacy

It's a Suzuki Samurai. They get a different roof than the one we had here-I think that thing is still being produced for markets like Asia, Indonesia and Africa. Tough little trucks-not really designed for US roads, I worked with someone that had one and borrowed it now and then-that thing would get blown all over the road in cross winds-or if a tractor trailer passed and it was twitchy due to the narrow and short wheel base. They seem popular on the rock krawler circut.

Re: ID a truck in The Bourne Supremacy

Thanks MDK. Based on your positive ID of it as a Samurai, I did some more digging and it turns out that you are correct but not entirely correct.

First off, I found a picture from the movie that shows the logo:

Remember, this sequence takes place in Gao, India (see below).

As I stated above, it looks like something that Suzuki would build but there were two reasons I didn't think it was a Samurai:

1. The dimensions are different from the U.S. Samurais that were everywhere during the late 80s.

2. The front logo is something I have never seen before. Every Suzi I have ever seen in the U.S. either just said "SUZUKI" on the grill (a la the FJ's "TOYOTA") or had the Suzuki "S" logo, like this one:

Turns out, the truck in The Bourne Supremacy is indeed a Samurai but it is a Samurai LWB (stands for Long WheelBase), a vehicle that was not sold in the U.S. but was sold in many other countries under a variety of different names.

The version sold in India was called the "Maruti Gypsy." Here is one with a softtop:

Lo and behold, this is the official Maruti logo:

A bit dirty/scuffed up, but that is the same logo as the movie truck.

Mystery solved, thanks for the help.

Re: ID a truck in The Bourne Supremacy

Good work! I never got a good look at that logo before, I guess Suzuki must licence the truck to that company in India??

With a longer wheel base I bet that Samurai would have fit the US market better and performed better in the roll over testing that killed that truck.

Whomever she is-is time to give up the halter tops!
