New coil overs for my 92 Toyota Pickup

I order some coil overs for my project truck a couple weeks ago and they came in minus the coils they should be here next week. I wasn't expecting them till around the middle of Dec.

They are from a fairly new company called F.O.A. the quality seems nice at first glance especially for the price. I can't wait to get my truck all back together and try them out in the river bed.

here is a little quote from there site to get you an idea of what there about
Quote:
FOA Shock Absorbers is a new take on an old idea. The basic design of most high performance shocks are all very similar. Thinking along the lines of “don’t fix what isn’t broken” we didn’t want to change the design of a high performance shock, we just wanted to figure out how to make that shock more affordable. After much thought, design and work, we’ve come up with the answer. Patent Pending FOA High Pressure castings.
High Pressure casting has been around for quite some time in all industries. It allows the precise forming of all kinds of products at an extremely reasonable price and time frame. With our new Patent Pending Process we can make these castings extremely strong and very durable.

Here is a comparison of the properties of materials used by us and our competitors.

Material-------------------Hardness RB--------Tensile KSI-----yield KSI------elongation % in 2"

6061-0-----------------------------30----------------------18-----------------8-----------------------25-30

6061T4-----------------------------65----------------------35----------------21---------------------22-25

6061T6-----------------------------60----------------------45----------------40-----------------------12

Pressure cast A-380-----------80---------------------47----------------23-----------------------3.5

Pressure cast ZA-8------------95-110----------------54----------------42--------------------- 6-10

A- 380 is what we use for things like our seal head, piston, and spring retainers.
Z A-8 is used in the top cap and lower rod end due to its additional elongation.
Both alloys get an additional additive to further enhance their elongation properties.

The Tensile strength of our castings is greater than in the 6061 used by most of our competitors.

By using our special casting methods, we’ve been able to build a shock that has the performance you’ve come to expect in a higher end shock at a much lower price.
Since our design is like many other manufacturers, our shocks can be rebuilt, serviced or revalved by just about anyone familiar with race shocks. We offer a wide selection of valving options to suit most any vehicle and setup you may have.
Our seals are Buna-N, the same seals used by the large majority of shock manufacturers. We offer an upgrade to Viton seals at a very reasonable price. Viton seals are typically only seen in full race shocks costing many times more than what we sell our shocks for.
We are confident enough in our product to offer a 1-year Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.
Take a look around our site….I’m sure you’ll agree that we have the best value in off-road shocks anywhere.

Ok on to the pictures, these are 2.5"x8" external reservoir shocks. The spring I will be running will be a 16" 600lb Eibach.
O don't mind the brown carpet from the 70's and 80's

fully compressed and extended

top of shock and spring retainer

rod and rod ends

rod end, extra long to clear my axle.

external reservoir

here are a couple pictures of my A-arms on the passenger side of the truck to show the travel and were the shocks will be mounted.

full drop+/-

full compression+/-

I should be cycling around 12" of travel when it is all done.

now I can start making my shock hoops know that I have the shocks in.

Re: New coil overs for my 92 Toyota Pickup

Sweet! I have a similar project ongoing with my 89!

I have a custom bed with flared bedsides and the fiberglass fenders as well for some big bad tires and travel like yours...

So far I have 2.8 motors and a load of other parts but not time or money to finish yet... FJ has been getting most of it.

What engine you running? I have a 3VZE and spare I was building (the 0.8 motor, almost complete) but decided I would rather swap in the 3.4L which I picked up for little over 300 bones. Maybe a S/C...?

Nice pics and thanks! Keep 'em coming. Maybe a build-up thread?

I love these trucks!
your 2.8 kind of through me off I was think "theres no 2.8L and the 22re can only get bored out to 2.7 max"

I have the beautiful 22re with a bored out throttle body, MSD ignition, hacked up intake, Downey header and custom header back exhaust. And a spare engine in the garage that I will build up one day if I ever get the time. You made a good chose with the 3.4 it is so much better then the 3VZE.

Were you doing any suspension work or mainly engine?

These are for custom installs only. I don't now what you have done to your 4Runner but you would need to change the suspension to long travel to get the room needed to get these. I payed around $660 for my set up which is close to half what it would cost if I got Kings, FOX or SAW.

I don't think so there more focused on the prerunner/sand car scene and they only offer a 2.5 right now and are working on getting a by-pass out here soon.

Thanks, and I can't wait ether it is going to be so nice when she is done!

Na the idle still hunts some times, haven't had the time to really go over it with it being on jack stands. From what a Toyota racer told me it is a sensor that is in the block and its not really a big deal more annoying then anything else, plus it doesn't do it consistently so it will be hard to figure out. I am thinking the throttle position sensor might have something to do with it so I will play around with that when I get to it.

Ah yes... the 22RE. I love it! One of our project trucks here is Dan's 4Runner. You may have seen his build-up thread... it used to belong to my dad. Dan is now dating my sister so I still get to help him wrench on it!

I helped him put in the Downey exhaust and intake. Those were fun installs because of all the cutting and fitting involved. He has the PaceSetter headers as well.

I plan to do some suspension upgrades eventually, which is why I bought the bed and fenders. Long travel like you! It is nice to see this option, thanks!

I've been picking up sensors on eBay for both 3VZ's and 5VZ's because I feel they are the weakest points in the system. The mechanical stuff either works or it doesn't but those sensors getting worn out is just plain annoying. Try to keep an eye open. I got a new TPS and a few other new sensors for WAY less than I should have. 22RE stuff is more common as well.

So I imagine you drool over sites like:

LCEngineering
D.O.A. Racing Engines

and the like! I'd put Downey there as well but you obviously know about them.

What other sites should I keep my eye on for build up parts? Thanks

There is so much out there for are trucks, I love it. You can go from all out race suspension to SAS for are trucks I picked one a little closer to the race end.
I started with the Downey exhaust and then started hacking it up its now ends right after the cab. I did for a time have the exhaust end right after the cat man that sounded nice (muffler fell of before I had it welded). A little loud but I didn't mind, you could here my little 2.4L 2 miles away.

Thanks for letting me know about the sensors on Ebay I will keep my eyes open.

I would love to have a LCEngineering motor but man there $$$
as for other sites to look at NWOR has some stuff as well as All Pro. You can also check RDC Classifieds O and performance products has some stuff for us as well I think. They stopped sending me there catalog a year ago so i can be sure.

I would just recommend staying away from the drop brackets. My truck had one on when I got it and I hated it. If you want to start small with the suspension go with something like Downey's dual shock kit and SAW torsion bars.
