need advice about my son's first car

I have been thinking about getting my son and old $4000 truck or jeep that we could work on and teach him about vehicle maintenance.
Today I stumbled across a 2000 land rover discovery with 105k miles. It seems to be in good condition and drives out very well. I was not planning on getting him something this nice but the price seemed to good to pass up. They are selling it for $4800.
any rover people that could give me an idea of problems to look for would be very helpful.
Thanks
Scott

Re: need advice about my sons first car

We've got 90K on this one. It's also a 2000. My advice is have a trusted mechanic inspect the truck first. We've owned 8 Land Rovers and three of those were Discos. No major problems with any of them.

Buy him an old Jeep! Cheaper to fix up? More mods available? IMO of course!

The Discovery is nice though!

Re: need advice about my son's first car

Personally I like Landrovers, I've owned two but the biggest issue I've had is getting parts and aftermarket stuff for them. Unless you really know a good LR parts source you end up at the dealer for just about everything. That was the final straw that made my sell my last rover, that and they are just getting too prissy IMO so buying a new one was out for me.

Re: need advice about my son's first car

here's the other good source and forum
Land Rover Series Defender Discovery Range Rover Parts | Rovers North

Discovery II - Rovers North BBS Forums

Disco Series II s have a more advanced Bosch electronic ignition and a direct ignition system. The coil packs have proven to be a point of concern.
