Helped a friend buy a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4d

I have this friend who is stubborn as a mule and won't buy Japanese even if the American car is a POS. The FJ wouldn't work well for him anyway being that he's got a 2 year old and a new baby on the way (2 car seats (urgh!)). Anyway, he's had his heart set on the new Jeep Unlimited 4 door even before they were a thought. Having some previous car sales background, last night I helped him finally pull the trigger on an X package with the power and convenience 4x4. What do you all think of this rig? 3.8 liter 202 hp 4 speed auto yada yada yada. Standard largest tire that comes with it is a 255/70-17. The coolest thing about it is the modular hard top IMO. My only complaint about the FJ is it's not convertible like the Jeep.

Re: Helped a friend buy a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4d

I think reliability wise, he'll likely regret the purchase, though FJ Cruisers have been far from the trouble free product Toyota usually puts out.

Personally, if he didn't get the Rubicon package, and he wants to wheel it on the better trails in AZ, he's going to be money behind in the long run.....but not everyone that buys a Jeep plans to wheel it.

It's his choice. He's just lucky to have friend that was willing to help him out with the deal.

Re: Helped a friend buy a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4d

My buddy is in sales at the local Jeep dealer. He had me come in the and test drive the 2 door wrangler. Pretty much told me the manager wanted to know what all the hype was about with the FJ. I took out the Heep and was not impressed with the handling, stereo, traction control, interior and there may be others. We then proceeded to all take out the FJ (myself, salesman and manager). I sat in the back while the manager of Jeep was test driving my FJ. He loved the power (cuz I told him to punch it on the highway), VSC, handling (loved the coilovers), loved the color, bumper, tires... but his only negative comment was the road noise from the tires and exhaust.
Both of them loved the FJ over any Wrangler they have ever been in. I left there with a huge smirk on my face and raz him everytime i see him.

AZ - I had my heart set on the Wrangler too until I drove both the Wrangler with a manual and the A/T - then the FJ. I was unimpressed with the output of the 3.8L (which I think they borrowed from the Dodge Minivans ) The open-air capabilities of the Jeep were the main reasons I was looking at Jeep, but after the test drives it was over. The Jeep just had seemingly no power on the highway, especially on gradual hills and when trying to pass. I would have thought that the 6-speed manual would be more responsive, but it was the same.

I hope it works out for your friend. One of my friends at work has the 4-door Sahara model and she loves it.

Re: Helped a friend buy a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4d

I have both, an 07 FJC (mine) and a 2dr 08 JK (hers). My ONLY complaint with the JK is the lack of power. I think it handles fine, great compared to a TJ. The ESP (traction control) does get on my nerves sometimes but turning it off takes care of that.
I don't think the pissing contest of which vehicle is better is worth. They both wheel great.

Yeah, it bums me out we don't have the button in the FJ.

Re: Helped a friend buy a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4d

I'm an ex-hardcore jeep fan and was torn between the FJC and Wrangler unlimited myself, but 1 year later I am still happy I chose the FJC. I just think they tried to superficially "civilize" the wrangler too much in the latest redesign and it didn't feel right to be in one. The vibes were all wrong I miss the TJ.

The FJ on the other hand satisfies my life long urge to own a landcruiser and is a great "jack of all trades" on and off road truck without being too practical (and therefore boring)
