I was stoped at a traffic light today and on either side of me were a Scion xB and a Honda Element. I just don't get these little boxes with wheels. The drivers reminded me of the folks you see in Dilbert comics or on the tv show The Office. I began to see a pattern. Are the folks that drive these vehicles drawn to them because they somehow remind them of the cube farms they work in? Is it some sort of subconscious cubism at work? Hmmmmmn........

Take what man makes and use it,
But do not worship it,
For it shall pass.
If to do were as easy as to know what were good to do,
Chapels had been churches, and poor mans cottages, princes’ palaces.
Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.

I think it might be a euro look. This was my first reaction when I saw the Xb. The new updated one isn't to bad, kinda smoother and sexier looking. Anyway, to each his own I suppose.

aaaand you dont think the FJ is boxy? lol
The square vehicles started in japan years ago and caught on quick. the Scion Is actually branded as BB or Black box, there are also other vehicles such as the Voxy and the Cube. I think they caught on not only because they stand out from the way all the other companies were building stuff, but they are small and easy to park(a huge problem in some countries) with a big amount of interior space.

Yup. While in Japan I noticed most vehicles were small and smaller. They were mostly Mitsubishis and Suzukis and boxy, to utilize space and still get good gas mileage.. a Vitara would have been a large vehicle there. The FJ would be a monster.

I remember when I was there in 85 I had bought a toyota (lite ace) mini van from a fellow Marine who was rotating out . First trip was to Naha and found a "parking garage " It was actually a Ferris wheel setup that you pulled your car in and the guy gives you a claim ticket, then you watch yor car park in a cage and it just goes in circles untill you are ready to go. hand the guy your stub , he gets your car and bingo off you go!! this was very strange the first time I saw it! Do not even get me started on how an American gets his/her Japanese licence!!!

Yeah, I kinda like the new ones. They definately incorporated a little FJ into the design.

I really like the Xb (both old and new versions) and the Element . . . as well as the Nissan Cube which isn't sold here. They are so unbelievably roomy both in the front and the back. They offer all the performance that is really necessary and they get adequate to good mileage. The old Xb could average over 30 mpg on highway commutes.
Most of the folks (especially soccer moms) driving gas-guzzling V8 SUVs could easily get by driving one of these. The Element is even offered with AWD.
The funny thing is that the target audience for the Xb, Element, and FJ was supposed to be the younger set 20s-30s but they have found that a much, much larger than expected number of buyers are in their 50s and up. These vehicles are very comfortable, economical, and utilitarian for everyday use. Can't wait to see Ford's new Flex.
