I just bought a 1983 Toyota Pickup to accompany my FJ and I am wondering if any of you know of a carburetor that won't cut out when I am on a steep incline. I currently have a 22r engine, 5 speed manual trans with a 2 barrel weber carb. The other day I was trying to climb a relatively short but very steep hill and near the top my truck would stall everytime. It won't restart until I back down to the flat again. Now I must admit the hill has a huge rut on the right side and I ride the rut to the top until the truck is practically straight up and down(a little exaggeration). So maybe the side hill climb combined with the steep accent is too much. Needless to say I was very disappointed as this was my first run in the new truck. It has dual detroit lockers and 5.29 gears. Hence the need to attack such a hard hill climb. Now I know the best thing would be to have fuel injection and that is possibly the route I might take but I would sure like have some fun before I make the big change over to a 4.3 with a 700r4 auto trans. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance.
If I remember correctly, the Weber carbs don't like steep inclines. The floats will shift and thin the mixture out. I never had any experience with offroading using Webers. However, I used to run them (3 - 2bbls) on a 240Z I had in high school and had to modify the floats/springs to keep it from thinning out during hard cornering.
I know it's not much info, but I hope it helps with a little insight.

Holley makes off-road carbs with a center float that is better at keeping the engine running on steep grades. Don't know if they make on for the 22R but it wouldn't take much effort to find out. Also, check other forums specific to your truck. Others have/ had the same problem and I'm sure they've figured out some solutions.

The Weber is the only carb Im aware of that is somewhat made to fit that engine with the adapter plate you see. The stock Aisin carb (if you are only interested in keeping a gasoline carb setup) is going to be as good as you can do for offraod driveability unless you get real exotic and adapt a fuel injection from a 22RE. The manifold and head are different though, if you want to go with toyotas setup- there may be other aftermarket .
I hate those "in the box" rebuilt carbs, I think you'd be better off finding a working unit and having someone rebuild it that worked on those back then.
I'd leave the float adjustment slightly below the dot on the sight glass on the carb bowl.
I used to rebuild those frequently "back in the day", the last one probably no less than 8~ years ago.
I think in retrospect they were more reliable by the numbers than just about any carb in production. But carbs are a dying breed in the professional repair field. I'd say they are about a dead breed.

Dont know about your toyo but my jeep used to have similar problems and it helped if you pumped the gas. This seemed to help the gas flow through the carb for me. They may make a conversian kit to a fuel injected engine for your engine. I know quadratec has one for old jeeps.
Thanx for all the replies guys. The propane conversion sounds like a great idea. I am going to look into all the options that have been presented. Keep 'em coming....
here is a propane conversion co, I have heard good things about them and am thinking of getting one of there kits for my 40 http://www.gotpropane.com/p4.html

Re: I Need Carburetor Help (1983 Toyota Pickup)
Check the float level on your carb and the fuel filter; I have an '84 pickup with the stock Aisin carb and it has never done that.
