Re: My father switched sportscars

My car prior to the FJ was the BMW 335i twin turbo. It truly was a monster, especially on the autobahn. I had no problem hitting speeds up and around 150mph/240kph until I would get roasted by an M5 or a porsche. It was a great car. The i-drive is absolutely terrible. To find a simple function it was buried down 2 or 3 levels into the menu.

My biggest complaint, and why I own an FJ now, is the customer service. I had an electrical problem and BMW could not fix it. In the process, I contacted BMW USA, Italy and Germany and none of them were willing to help, they all treated the car like it was radioactive. After three months BMW took the car back, I got a refund and bought the FJ.

Re: My father switched sportscars

My dad has a '00 328i (winter) and an '04 M3 (summer) and they are both great cars. Neither of which should be compared to a C5 Vette. Your dad made a good decision IMO, with exception of the payment situation.

Re: My father switched sportscars

Turbo lag isn't noticeable except at a dead stop from 1st gear. My old WRX had lots of turbo lag and really didn't spool up in 1st gear until about 4000rpm...it was more linear. I guess the stereotype of BMW owners driving like bats out of hell is how they set up the fueling. Personally I'd hate having neck snap acceleration if I wanted to go slowly and smoothly. The V8 in the Corvette was way more predictable, all-motor and perfected fueling.

The Vette had a bigger trunk but no back seat. When the BMW trunk is set up so the top can go up and down at any time, there is laughable trunk space. When the trunk seperator is raised up (so you can't lower the convertible top into the trunk) the space in the back was big enough for perhaps a set of golf clubs and a duffle bag. Also the Vette is wider (I think?)

The idrive system is like learning how to use Windows again. The features are nice, but I can see people crashing the car if they're paying more attention to the stereo than the road ahead.

He also can only drive 10k miles a month, instead of the unlimited possibilities of driving through wine country or wherever the heck he wanted on the weekends.
