Basically a rolling chassis with pretty good sheet metal. Has a 4" spring lift on it already. Engine, transmission and transfer case out out of it but come with it. 304 unknown condition as is the 4 speed trans. I'm thinking chevy drive train anyways.
Not sure what direction I want to go with this yet. However, I know it wont be a restoration, lol. It will be built to play and play hard.
I'll post up some pics tomorrow.

Cool, I had a 78 CJ7 for 8 years, I used it to tow my flats boat and just cruise it. Not a whole lot of 4 wheeling in the Fl Keys
I did the body work and painted it, previous owner had
3/8" of bondo in areas. New springs and shocks, Stock 6 cyl added Holly 2bbl and header, ehaust. New seats and stereo and fiberglassed the entire interior tub with drain holes, it worked out well.

205 is a poor choice b/c you can't get low enough gear for it. It's only 1.96:1 in low range. It IS bullet proof, but there just aren't low enough gears....though there was a 3:1 kit available at one point....I dont' think it still is an option though.
The D20 isn't a bad case, but it's offset, it's old and parts are hard to come by.
Oh, and PAINT that thing!!

I was actually thinking about linex for all the sheet metal. However, as it sits I will fit in just fine here in TN, lol.
Can you put the front end of the 203 on a 205?

No. The 205 is gear driven. The 203 is chain. They can be mated (doubled) but I wouldn't waste my time with the too short driveline issues you're going to have anyway.

Sean, was looking around a new salvage yard and ran across a few Jeeps. Found an old J-series pick-up and from what I have read there is a possibility of the rear being a Dana60 and a 44 up front. What is the best/easiest way to tell.

Well, 60 and 44s have "D60" or D44 cast into the webbing on the front side of the axle, usually on the bottom most webs near where the tubes insert into the casting......usually.
That's the best place to start.
J-truck series axles aren't really a good match for your Jeep unless you are going with a D20 tcase (which I wouldn't recommend), but it also largely depends on your plans for the rig, and the overall budget you have in mind.
The fact of the matter is: for the amount of money you're going to spend to build a D44 front axle, you might as well buy a D60 front. The only difference is the initial purchase price of the boneyard axle and that difference is substantial (around here $150-250 for a D44 and $1000-1500 for a D60), but after that, axle shafts, bearings, brakes, calipers, lockers, gears, steering arms, knuckles, etc. are only slightly more expensive for a D60 and you get a MUCH stronger front end.
HTH,
Sean
