Would you be confortable buying a 15 year old car?

I been thinking about buying a little sports car that i can mod the hell out of. im basically done with my fj, only mods left are minor. thing is i like older cars, early 90's mostly (really really like 1992-95 mr2, then theirs honda prelude or integra type r maybe, VW Scirocco also, late 80s early 90s bmw 3 series etc). it would be a car to mod and maybe track and not a daily. i just can't bring myself to buy one for some reason. they are pretty cheap, anywhere from 4-5000 to 10-12000.

would anyone else not be confortable buying one? Milage is easily tampered with unfortunatly. im just not sure.

Re: Would you be confortable buying a 15 year old car?

I know it's not the same thing but I just bought a 32 year old FJ40 and had some reservations about it. In the end, I bought it and really am enjoying it. I would say, do your homework (which it sounds like you have already done), find the best deal you can and go for it!!

BTW, I completely mis-read the title to this thread. I though you were asking about buying your 15 year old child a car. When I starting reading I had to look back at the title.

If the body is in good condition and the previous owner has great maintenance records then...Yes!

I was going to purchase a late 80's Porsche 944 Turbo instead of the FJ. Don't have any regrets going with the FJ, but doubt I would have regreted the 944 turbo either.

Miata? You should be able to get one for under $2000 and they are easy to work on.

Re: Would you be confortable buying a 15 year old car?

Youre in canada??? Dont they have the JDM 15 year import law? If thats the case, I want a RHD, Gen 2 MR2! Coupled with the low mileage on the JDM cars and VERY competitive pricing (imported JDM mr2s at $7K USD are in MUCH better condition than the USDM Mr2 at the same price), Id say its worth it. Well worth it.

Re: Would you be confortable buying a 15 year old car?

When I purchased my first MR2 (1991 model) it had 141,000 miles on it. Body needed paint and the seats needed recovering however the engine was great.

Used it as a daily driver forever and I love the car. I say go for it especially if you can find a decent MR2. They are getting harder and harder to find.

Here is a picture of it on a recent trip to the mountains:

I Absolutly Love mr2's, but i have a hard time believing the low milage on those jdm cars, most of them have less than 100k kms (60k miles, and also a car that has sat in a garage and not moved much in 5 years or more cant be a good thing.).. also dunno how i feel about driving standard on a right hand drive car, dont get me wrong a jdm mr2 or a nissan skyline r32 or r33 would be awsome, but as stated above,,,,, im just not sure.

I'm looking for a 1978 Datsun 280Z in decent shape. I had one back in the day, and always wanted another.

Re: Would you be confortable buying a 15 year old car?

I would have no problems buying an older car, esp if it was a good one like the MR2. That said, I would expect the car to have multiple quirks (gremlins) and just plan on a monthly donation to replace wearing items. This why I got rid of my FJ40....the monthly donation was exceeding the cost of a new Jeep payment (Goodbye FJ40)

I would take the time to find a stellar example...there are lots of cool cars from the era. Merkur, Dodge Conquest, Dodge Stealth, Nissan 300z turbo...etc.

I am on my 4th Fiero GT over the years...this one is a Sawed off Speedster.

Cheap fun!
