I agree with the BFG's not self cleaning. They are terrible in that regard. Mud and the BFG AT ko's don't mix well at all. Once the mud gets caked in it's like driving on slicks. I think I would have made it up if I had air'd down beforehand. Who knows though. If your going to be going offroad often id go with another tire then the bfg's. However, they are a nice compromise when you use the FJ daily.
I agree...the VERY first climb I did...MattFJ07 can testify...I forgot to use anything but 4x4. I went back and tried the climb again with the FJ's secret weapons...and still could not pull it...but alas....this was the only time I could not make any of the pulls. It was the only time when TIRES were the main factor for not making it up.
The short little hill I could not make is the one above in the VID. You pass through a large mud hole just before you take a hard right up the hill....the stock Duellers just dont have time to clean themselves before needing traction.
Garsgrl....did you redeem yourself on that hill?? You had BFG's right??
I never went back to it. Judging by the other stuff we climbed that day im sure if I had thought about using a-trac I would have made it easily. Heck, even airing down would have been a big help.
Momentum is the key, you can always slow down but you can't speed up on climbs like that. You should use low range when on the trail unless it's a smooth level trail, using high range is hard on the trans on climbs like that.
On the tires, there's several new MT style tires that still perform well on the road. I run the Maxxis Big Horns on my daily driver ('02 Xterra) and I'm very pleased with them.
Really? You sure it wasn't A-TRAC or Locker set up or hack? As in one used locker and not A-TRAC or other way around? Or maybe driver ability? Looks like the Voodoo (sorry not sure who that was) with the Demello bumper didn't make it on the first try, but did on the second. Looks like he carried quite a bit more speed on the second try, and it looks as though the first guy that didn't make it was barely moving. In my experience you have to have a fair bit of forward momentem no matter what tires you have if you're gonna' play in the mud, especially when it's uphill
I was the BFG AT FJ that would not make it up at all in the video. I had A-TRAC on but not the locker. No hack (no need), my FJ is only a few months old. Locker would have made no difference, I can assure you. Both rear tires were spinning quite freely. I simply could not get any momentum at all to start. In my last attempt, you can see I backed up as far as was safe and re-approached with a steady throttle.
I suspect if I could have gotten any momentum I would have gotten all the way or most of the way up. That is the only climb that my FJ should have made it up and didn't all weekend that I can recall.
We pretty much lived in mud all day Sunday and the BFG ATs did just fine on almost all of it. Frankly, I continue to be impressed with how well they do in mud for a non-MT tire.

I never take as many pictures as I intend to on wheelin' trips but I did snap a few, mostly of the views. I wish I had gotten some pics of that goldfish pond on trail 30 but forgot.
Anyway, here are some of the better ones:

This one is a view of downtown Evarts taken from trail 29 if memory serves
From a gas station bathroom in Chilhowie, VA, proving that France-bashing knows no bounds:
