i had parked and walked up a small hill to see if i can drive over it and when i looked back, the tortoise was definding his territory... (or falling in love)

i'm part of the Southern Nevada Tortoise Group... i help others create proper environments in their yards to keep them... he lives in the backyard (20ft x 50ft area...) the desert tortoise is a protected animal. there are a lot of people that keep them without setting up a proper yard... with the right environment, they can be healthy and happy...
they really are pretty smart, too!

The Dude is a rescue tortise also and yes very smart. He knows that treats come out of the kitchen. Also, did you know how much they love Hibscus flowers? Our neighbor is AZ. Game and Fish and they have 3, she told me about the flowers.

p.s. don't buy tortoises! if you live in southern nevada, and have the group help you set up your yard, you can get one for free! a lot are relocated that were in construction areas, etc... there are similar groups for other desert tortoises in similar deserts...

We have one at my daughters day school, and coincidentally, I named the hard drive on my 360 "Turtle poop"...no reason, just to make me laugh...and so I see this turtle at the school and there are two or three other kids (around 2 or 3 yrs old) who come up to me and we say "Turtle poop" to each other...drives the director crazy!
I love messing with their small mailable little minds! (The director's not the kids!)

yes, flowers, grape leave, spineless cactus, tortoise megadiet (tortoise diet created by smithsonian institute)... all good.

thanks for the rescue and proper care! yes, i'll open the door, and ludwig wants to come in to see the cats and ****atiel! very smart! he's got several burrows in my back yard, fresh water, and the best a tortise could ask for!
