I have a ten year old son. A child that can tell you anything and everything about almost any video game out there....handhelds, 360, PS3....he is THE expert. It is my fault because I buy them for him. Well, to get him out of this phase, I planned a surprise camping trip. No cell phones, pagers, Gameboys, DVDs. He wasn't too excited about the idea for fear of having withdrawal seizures from Nintendo.
Here is the normal "costume" that my wife prefers that I wear and that most people see me in. I need to peel this skin off and get back to basics. Perhaps this camping trip will do us BOTH some good.
Here is little man on the morning of the trip, before we left the house. Can you tell that he doesn't want to go? Remember this face.
Arrival at the campsite. This kid "poses" for every picture that he takes. Fortunately, I caught him unknowingly looking out over the water. Maybe this trip wouldn't be so bad to him after all.
The first tent that he ever helped set up. It was done in a rainstorm, which made it all the more fun for him. Because of the rain, we had the entire area to ourselves for the weekend.

You gotta catch your own bait. My son and one of his cousins that we took along for the trip.
Starting things off the next morning. He had never fished before or spent a night in the "wild". He was the first one to wake up and we had to put reigns on him, convincing him that we needed to eat something before we went fishing.
His first fish. You would have thought that he landed a two ton shark. In his eyes, it was.
Another visitor that we ran across.....or rather, he ran across us. It was about a foot and a half long (from tip of nose to back of shell) and had MAJOR attitude. I have actually seen guys loose fingers to these things. My son wanted to take him home. After careful consideration, I said no.
The evening before we left.....and he is STILL fishing....3 days in the woods, and not ONE mention of a video game from him.
Taken right before we left FOR home. Compare this to the morning when we LEFT home. Little man actually shed a few tears and wanted to stay for another 3 day session. I can't say that I didn't feel the same. Since then, we have been back twice and somehow or another, those video games don't mean as much to him anymore. And....I learned another lesson in regards to parenting. It was a great trip, made priceless by spending time in the woods with 3 pre-teens (and a Toyota).
Thanks FJ! I couldn't have done it without ya. P.S. I also felt a lot more comfortable in my rediscovered skin myself.
