I completely understand the hatred for the fences. It's difficult to get good shots with everything obstructed. My first time up there I was seriously disappointed. Second time around, I got some better shots. The train station was one such place that gave me some issues on the first trip. But I noticed on the second time through that someone had pulled large holes in the chain link. I was able to get some decent shots this time. I'll post a link to the latest round of shots.
I'm bent on getting to Bodie. It looks like one of the best preserved ghost towns around. I want to head up to the Northern area of Nevada as well. I've seen some interesting sites online.

I might be down for this. Though, i think there are quite a few ways to do this with more off road and less pavement. :-) I'm here in town and would be happy to sit down with the topo and look at it, if you're want. Either way, looks like a great trip.

PS: i hate pavement.
Awesome! We can do that. I am looking at some additional ways as well, possibly adding one camping night onto it.
I'd be totally tempted to join but would hate to come out so far and not visit my peeps in SoCal and Arizona. Fitting a two-weeker in between Cruise Moab and the FJSummit could only happen with the perfect work schedule.
So tempted to just take Mid-June to end-of-July off.
I WILL be watching this thread, Nick.

Awesome! We're passing on the Summit this year, or at least that is our plan now. We're going to put a lot into this run as our "big one" for the year.
This sounds like a lot of fun. It would be a great trip for me and my 10yr old and maybe even the wife. I've been from LV thru Beaty to Tonapah multiple times for trips to Round Mountain. Also been from Tonapah to Reno by way of Hawthorne but never been off the highway. A Buddy of mine used to work for North American Exploration and spent a lot of time working in NV and the same as you says there are some amazing places off the blacktop.
