Baja Trip

Got a chance to drive Baja with my G-Wagon buddies next week, anybody have any tips or pointers? Can't take the FJ but it should be fun anyway!

Re: Baja Trip

Thats cool, where are you planing to go?, I recommend crossing the border Thru Tecate, to avoid the haggle of Tijuana.

Also you definitely want to go to "San pedro martir" is this observatory with a killer view.

I Guess you will cross thru some where else since you're coming from Albuquerque, so Calexico or San Luis should be a good place to cross the border

Re: Baja Trip

You'll love it, to bad you can't drive though.

If you guys are crossing the boarder at TJ do it during the day and just get out of town asap and down past Ensenada. Thats the area that all the drug cartel, murders, kidnappings and conflicts are going on. But once your out of the major city's north of Ensenada you'll be safe and seeing the true baja its a beautiful place filled with good people. Stay together as a group and don't stop for anyone on hwy 1!

Don't drink the water, and be careful eating fruit. Eat fish tacos in Ensenada near the fish market and lots of carna asada everywhere else and the meat they cut off the big rotating stick is really good as well. I would tell you what it is but I don't know how to spell it.
Bring pepto bismol just in case, and have fun.

Saw something on 20/20 (or was that 60min) recently on the high rate of kidnapping in Mexico. Here is the travel alert. NOT TRYING to scare anyone, just be alert and careful.

Re: Baja Trip

Good advice so far, the meat on the stick is Adobada or Al Pastor, its great pork.

The drive through Tecate is a safer route right now if you take it do some wine tasting at the wineries. Stock up on anything you need in Ensenada, best non-fish tacos are in Maneadero.

The gas is full service, a $1.00 tip is cool, toss in another to clean all windows. Drink beer, soda or mineral water and you will be fine.
