Photo Safari Noobs - February in CO

Not sure if this counts as an expedition or not, but I and three friends are heading from Vegas to Denver in late February. The plan is to get there via backroads and shoot (with cameras) the winter mountains an hoefully some local wildlife. Click here for more details on the trip.

We'll be making the trip in my FJ. I am little concerned about the weather and the roads. We'll be passing just south of Ouray and Telluride. Click here for our proposed route. If you live in or know the area well, I'd really appreciate your feedback. I don't want us to bite off more than we can chew. And, I'd like to know the best places for wildlife spotting along the way.

Many thanks!

Doug

Doug, sure sounds like an expedition to me. Good luck with the weather and I know you're going to get more than a few fabulous pics out of this. Post up when you get back.

That looks like a fun route, I'd suggest you go north from Durango through Ouray, then right at Montrose & down 50. It's (IMHO) a little better scenery than your proposed route.
Would you be interested in meeting up with us for a photo op for our April issue of FJC Magazine? It sounds like an awesome trip & we'd love to cover it for you

Re: Photo Safari Noobs - February in CO

looks like an excellent route. Youll see plenty of wildlife as we did recently made 2 trips on the 4 Corners region. Not sure if you guys are interested in Parks but
Mesa Verde is near Cortez (for ancient native american cliff dwellings)
Page (glenn canyon and the slot canyons of Antelope-upper and lower)
Moab, Arches, Canyonlands within that cluster
instead of going down 15south back to vegas, you can cut through Bryce and or Zion...

tons of possibilities and you can easily spend 1-2months on this trip. make sure you have enough storage for your pics coz I can easily fill up 3 4GB FC easily.

have fun and pls post pics

If you want to do a snow/ice run when you make it to Denver, PM me and we'll coordinate something.

We just got done doing this today.....

Shane - I'll have to check with the rest of the crew, but I am pretty sure they will be down for it. - Doug

Re: Photo Safari Noobs - February in CO

I'm going to be doing something similar in April but starting from Boulder, CO.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND including Ouray and Telluride in your trip. I think this is the most beautiful part of Colorado and no one should miss it.

Here's my proposed route:
from:Las Vegas, NV to, Denver, CO 80204 (Denver Art Museum) and back

The only thing you need to figure out is if Ophir pass is Open.

There a few places (Motels) to stay at in Silverton and Ouray. The town of Telluride might be a little expensive (because of the ski season).

C-DOT does a pretty good job in keeping those roads open during the Winter.

Good Luck
