Reverse in 6MT

So yesterday i had the fj in reverse going up a steep hill. This is not the first time its happened btw. Anyways, the entire car seemed to vibrate and i had to give it alot of clutch to keep it from stalling out. It felt like the parking brake was FULL ON! I deff smelled the burning smell from my clutch.

Anyways i decided to try doing the same thing going foward in 1st gear--no problem at all.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated..i dont wanna have to go to the dealer where they know absolutely nothing...

Re: Reverse in 6MT

On the trail I have experienced the same, I use 4L in reverse. Easier to control, as you don't have to go so fast. It seems to me that reverse is geared kind of high, thus all the vibration and need for clutch slipping to go uphill in reverse.

Re: Reverse in 6MT

I've noticed having to give a lot of clutch when backing up.. uphill, like into a driveway over a high curb or something. Clutch slips alot.

Re: Reverse in 6MT

I will agree that reverse seems geared kinda high, not sure I have ever fully engaged the clutch in reverse in my fj. never have to back uphill enough to smell the clutch though.

Re: Reverse in 6MT

actually i just found the gear ratios

5-speed ECT automatic 6-speed manual

1st 3.520 4.171

2nd 2.042 2.190

3rd 1.400 1.488

4th 1.000 1.193

5th 0.716 1.000

6th - 0.799

Reverse 3.224 3.607

Wow, reverse is actually much lower! No good reason for this if anything it should be the opposite with first being taller.

hmm any suggestions

Re: Reverse in 6MT

Never had a problem w/ reverse or letting the clutch all the way out if moving more than three feet, just be smooth and easy on the gas as yall say it's geared kinda tall. I bearly tap the gas as I let the clutch out even on slight hills and over curbs

I finally understand the lower gas mileage thing for the MT. Note: the reverse is taller in the MT than the AT which is typical.

The shuddering going backwards could just be the ill weight distribution of the vehicle ( most of it forward causing more pressure to be placed on the front set of wheels). The engine has plenty of torque, but if the wheels are mot moving fast enough then the fight has begun between the drivetrain and the engine to move the vehicle uphill. Remember that the optimum torque is in the 5000 RPM not at the 2000 or lower where most speeds are sustained.
