So far, there are 72 whiners with this problem. Interestingly enough, had to dig a bit to find this thread. If you do a search on paint chips, there are a lot to weed through.
Note there is a section on the poll just for people who are too cool to care about paint chips.
And why, specifically, is the FJ paint deficient compared to other auto manufacturers or after market paints?
First and foremost, for the last time, it's not. You are just choosing to conveniently ignore the fact that every other carmaker has this problem, here, i'll post it for you again:
oh....wait for it....wait for it.....same model you have listed in your sig there audi a6 paint chipping

Thanks for your input. I'm going to do what is right for me and my situation but would like to be educated about painting. Since you seem so knowledgable about paints, perhaps you can reccomend a specific brand or type in additon to answering the following questions:
How many base coats should be applied?
How many paint coats?
How many layers of clear coat?
Again, stay away from water based paints would be the first suggestion. Base coat? I think you mean primer. Sounds like you need to talk with your local bodyshop as you are clearly uneducated on this subject. The switch from a water based paint to a solvent based paint is going to yield better durability with all other things being equal.
As for your pie in the sky notion that toyota will change things and the paint will get better, totally false. It is only going to get worse. Take a second from being completely ignorant and read this article:
"Toyota began shifting to water based paints in 1999 as part of an effort to green their operations. Ford, Chevy and Maza have also developed water based paint procedures. The catch with water based paints is that the whole paint process: primer, first coat, -second and clear coat is not all fully water based. The primer and color coats are but they still need to be protected by a clear coat which is oil (Urethane) based. Toyota’s goal is to switch to water based middle coat and bumper painting by 2010."
This means that the paint is only going to get "softer"/more chip prone by 2010, end of story.
Jo2 - you have to stop this, it makes too much sense and you are being too negative. Facts can't be true, it must be something else...like some of the paint particles don't feel "bonded" to the undercoat and spontaneously decides to leave the relationship, breaking the "bond" with their fellow paint particles and leave their community on the FJ by "jumping ship". Its their form of domestic violence, yeah, thats it...

You're right! I am uneducated about automotive painting since this is the first automobile from any manufacturer that a have ever had to contemplate repainting.
I will take your advice and seek additional education so that I can communicate with Toyota in a more knowledgeable fashion.
Thanks for your input!

"On Toyota's website it states:
"Due to the nature of off-road driving, a truck's body has greater demands placed upon it than an average vehicle; the two most prevalent being body flex and corrosion. To help make the body rigid, the FJ Cruiser uses specially placed reinforcements and high-tensile-strength sheet metal. In order to help fight rust the FJ get anti-corrosion sheet steel in key areas along with anti-rust wax, sealer, and ANTI-CHIPPING PAINT.
With wheelwells being extremely susceptible to paint chipping and corrosion the FJ's get a thick PVC coating to help protect them form a gruesome fate."
So with that being said isn't Toyota responsible for all the FJ's that are having the paint chipping issue????
This is not normal like many people have said. This paint (Voodoo Blue) is not holding up something needs to be done."
This was a post from another FJ owner (I guess would also be considered a whiner)
The facts are that some are chipping, some are not. For those of us that have it happening, we are not alone, for those of you that don't have it happening, I'm happy for you and sincerely hope it doesn't start happening. As hostile as some of the people on this thread have been, I don't wish them any ill, and wouldn't wish them this issue.
Still not sure why the people that are having this issue don't have a right to talk about it with each other. This forum is not a totaliltarian regime that must squash peoples rights to discuss even the negative side of our experiences.
I think we have said from the get go that if you don't have the problem, you don't need to participate in our attempt to get it taken care of, I'm at a loss trying to understand why a few of you want to try to mock and shut down any dialogue.
An earlier comment was made that we were a bunch of liberals trying to screw the man....???? What the h3ll is that supposed to mean. Capitalism has plenty of room for customer satisfaction, communism is where you take what you get and don't dare complain. Seems to me the lefties are the ones trying to stop the discussion.
Upon further thought, I think the guys I identified as Toyota bots actually work for competitor auto manufacturers...perhaps Hummer or Nissan??? Their goal has been to insight a riot and get us to flame the FJ as owners-which has worked to an extent due to the fact that our claims of crappy paint jobs are real.
Clever approach, but their game is up!
On a more serious note, the quote from Toyota's website clearly states what it doesn't seem to provide for some owners-ANTI-CHIPPING PAINT!

Wrong again. Geez is slang and can be spelled either way.
Maybe I missed it (with having ADD) but did anyone post up pics yet of these defective paint jobs?
If you happen to work for Toyota then I would be happy to go through the trouble of taking pictures of micro. dots all over my rig and email them to your corporate email address....If not, then I'll save the hassle and just let the rep. take a look at it. I have nothing to prove to you or any other. Believe me or not, it really doesn't matter! My experience is my experience...I'm not seeking your approval or your sympathy.
Thanks for the concern
BTW, thanks for the lesson in slang. Although, I really don't have any use for it...I prefer English.

It is a hassle to post up a couple of pics yet you rant here 24/7 about it?
oh and to help you out again...English is capitalized.
Anyone else have any pics of a FJ that has "alleged" paint problems?
