White smoke after oil change

Tonight I changed the oil on my FJ moving to synthetic oil. This is the second time I've changed the oil. After starting the car I'm getting lots of white smoke. I put in 5 quarts of 5w30 oil, not wanting to overflow it.

Any ideas? Getting it towed to the local dealer in the morning.

Just prior to all for the last couple days I've been having a problem where the FJ (Automatic) was taking a while after stopping to seemily shift back to first so I could accellerate again, more than a couple seconds. If I accelerated too soon then the engine just revved until I felt the shift occur.

Tonight after changing the oil I probably drove half a block until my first stop sign and didn't notice the smoke. When accellerating after stopping the engine revved for about a second before I took my foot off the pedal and waited for the light bump feeling when the the transmission was back in first.

The smell is a light burning smell, nothing too overpowering. I don't want to start it up again to check.

Re: White smoke after oil change

Is it coming out the exhaust or under the hood?

It's coming from the exhaust. Something that resembles a smoke screen from a Bond movie.

White smoke may be steam... water from the cooling system may be entering the combustion. Do you smell that sweet coolant odor?

If the head gasket let go, the synthetic oil would not be the cause.

Re: White smoke after oil change

You are burning off the poly-metalhydridecarbonite in the oil or you spilled some on your exhaust manifold. I'm sorry.......I was trying to be funny. It's not funny, I hope it's not serious...........really.

Re: White smoke after oil change

The common culprit is water or antifreeze in the tailpipe or.... horrors of horrors one of those leaking into the cylinders. Near any water puddles? Did it start immediately after the oil change, like in the driveway or garage?

Re: White smoke after oil change

There's a bit of a smell so it's probably not steam. I don't want to start it up again to check. I was careful not to spill anything when removing the filter nor from adding the oil.

It started immediately, the smoke came after about half a block of driving.

When you say "a bit of a smell", is it a sweet smell or a burning oil smell?

Re: White smoke after oil change

Well I hope you didn't drain the oil and put 5 quarts down the wrong hole and melt a head gasket.
Any gauges read off the chart or warning lights come on?
