Instrument Pod on dash leaking?

Hey guys,

I have recently noticed a sheen of what looks like oil-like-liquid on the dash around the base of the instrument pod(compass, etc.) Anyone have a similar experience? If so what is casuing it? I'm wondering if the compass or the inclinometer are filed with an oil-like-liquid and that is what is leaking. I'm taking it to the dealer and I would like to give them some info becasue at first blush they had no idea what was casuing it.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Can't help since I've never heard of that happening. Does sound like one of them is leaking though.

Re: Instrument Pod on dash leaking?

Thats instrument fluid all right.

I don't know if the compass is liquid-damped---- I think it's a
magnetic flux-gate unit, and so wouldn't be.

The clinometer probably is the culprit.

It's about time someone came up with a new one

that would be a gauge leak...but I haven't heard that one yet....and I'm a test pilot for repairs!!!

Most likely the inclinometer... it is oil filled to dampen the movement. No worries, I'm sure they'll give you a new one.

I've got that as well.
Let us know what the dealer says. I need to take mine in for the same thing, but won't be able to have spare time until next week.

Re: Instrument Pod on dash leaking?

Just got the truck back from the dealer. It was a leaking instrument in the pod. If you have the same problem have the dealer order a new pod at the time you make the initial appointment. Otherwise you will end up going in twice (like me) as the dealer does not normally carry the pod in stock.

Was it the inclinometer?

The service rep I talked to was not sure. But it looks that way.

Hi,

Just wondering how it all turned out. I took mine by the dealer and no one there had heard of this happening. I sent them the link to this thread and they said they would do a little research. Heard back today and said they would call me when the part came in.
This "oil" has spread out in such a large circle now--it's just now reaching the passenger air bag area and has spread across the windshield channel for the defrost (sorry, don't know the exact terms).
I'll try and take a pic tomorrow in the light and post for those that are wondering what this is all about.

My concern is how in the world are they going to clean this up? The dash is supposed to have that matte look and feel and I'm not going to be happy if they smear some goop all over the dash to make it all match up.

So, for any of you that have had this pod replaced, how satisfied are you with the end results?

Thanks~
