Odd noise when I start the car....

There is an odd sound that I have been noticing, when I start the car (not when starting but after it's started) I start to hear this vibrating sound...almost a hum, coming from what I believe is on the passenger side, either inside the dash, or the engine bay, I have no idea what it is, but after I have been driving for a few minutes, it goes away...I'm pretty sure this isn't normal, but does anyone have any idea what it could be? I'm sorry I can't be more descriptive, but thats about all I know

Is it a heat shield from the exhaust rattling?

Re: Odd noise when I start the car....

I have no idea what the head shield is....it sounds like its coming from the front (engine bay) is that located there? It doesn't really sound like a rattle...more like a humming vibration, it goes down, and then up (sound) and then once I start driving for a bit it goes away....

Re: Odd noise when I start the car....

Could it be your TRD CAI. Mine rattles a little bit especially at wide open throttle.....
(vibrates the car!)

thanks, rp

Re: Odd noise when I start the car....

Why would it not rattle when I'm zipping around, but rattle when idle? I can start it, and it does it, then after I drive around I can stop, and it doesn't do it, but when I turn it off and back on, the sound is there again...I don't think it's the CAI, that normally only rattles on wide open throttle, and I know that rattle, it's not a rattle it's a humming...bleh...

You better check that because when my TRD CIA started to rattle @ wide open throttle I noticed the hold down bolts had loosen up inside the air box causing the rattle especially that double headed bolt with the rubber insulating center used for securing the A/C line to inner fender . Also go over the clamps for the hoses. I even put star washers on the lid screws after one had vibrated off. Got lucky that day and found the screw stuck between the firewall and inner fender.

It could be the converter for the 12v outlets . Or if it's just at start up it's the fuel system kicking on. Try turning the key to on with out starting and listen to see if thats the noice you hear.

Re: Odd noise when I start the car....

Hm...I was wrong, even after driving if I shift the car into reverse, or drive, or whatever, and go either way, it makes the humming\vibrating noise, only when I'm just letting the car go forward or backwards w little or no gas.... I can't imagine it being the CAI in this case....

Re: Odd noise when I start the car....

Since I don't have anyone to help me as of right now, I put the car in drive, got it up on a hill so that it would stay, and went to the passenger side...it seems to be coming from under the passenger dash, (where your feet go pretty much) I have absolutely no idea what it is, and if you open up the engine bay and try to listen for it, you just can't hear it due to the engine noise...I guess I'll take it to Toyota and let them hear it...
