Title:
ROOF RACK RATTLE NOISE

Models:
'07 FJ Cruiser

May 19, 2006

Introduction

The accessory roof rack for the FJ Cruiser may exhibit a rattle noise caused by the cross bar clamp assembly. The cross bar screw shoulders bottom out before the screws become snug, which causes a gap between the cross bars and the screw heads. If a customer complains of a rattle in the roof rack, verify the rattle is coming from the cross bar clamp assembly before completing this Repair Procedure.

A washer kit was created for the field-fix and the permanent countermeasure has been implemented.

Applicable Vehicles

^ 2007 model year FJ Cruiser vehicles equipped with the accessory roof rack.

Parts Information

Required Tools & Material

Warranty Information

Applicable Warranty*:

This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure

1. Remove the cross bar from the rack by unscrewing both the right and left thumbwheels. Be sure to grab the lower clamp before it falls on the roof. Set aside cross bars according to length specs.

2. Set the cross bar on a table upside down and using a T-25 Torx screwdriver, remove and discard the two (2) screws from the driver's slotted side" as shown.

3. Using parts from the washer repair kit (P/N PT278-35070-WK), add one (1) plastic washer under the head of each NEW screw and replace the screw in the cross bar.

NOTE :

^ Keep the washer centered on the screw so that it does NOT bind on the screw's shoulder during installation.

^ Do NOT overtighten the screws - tighten them just snug enough so that the plastic clamp can still slide onto the driver's end of the cross bar.

4. Position the cross bar back onto the roof rack in its original position. Repeat for the other three (3) cross bars.

NOTE :

^ Cross bars should be placed according to the direction arrows on the cross bars.

^ The lower clamps MUST be reinstalled on the same side of the vehicle that they were removed from.

5. Reinstall the thumbwheel and lower clamps to each cross bar and tighten the thumbwheels securely.
