Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

It's been months since my last posting, I moved to the sunny side of Washington. Sad it has to be in this topic. I found a Bulge with two cracks on the right side, DAMN... running 3 inch lift on 33's..

I did take it in to the dealer to me noted..

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

Thanks guys for all your work. From those of us who don't have problems... yet, we appreciate you being the tip of the spear on this one.

I have to ask, what is a TSB? and if there is a recall, would that involve completely turning in the vehicle for refund or exchange?

Edit: Found out the TSB is a Technical Service Bulletin. But what does that do for us?

It acts as a mechanical/technical problem alert to dealers, service departments and owners, typically accompanied by the means in which to solve/fix the problem.

But even more important than that, it typically serves as a documented confirmation and acknowledgment by the manufacturer that the problem has become their responsibility to remedy.

I see that on the poll that most people are having the rips occur in non modified FJs. Are those people taking them wheeling or just daily drivers maybe a little of both? Just curious i am watching my engine bay since this thread started. It is my daily driver as well as the occasional off road jaunt. Just wondering. Thanks.
This thread in it's entirety will spell out the broad spectrum of FJ's experiencing the problem... From mall cruisers to radical rock crawlers.

The only unknown is that the post 01/07 build dates have not (yet) developed cracks... Or at least no one on the forum has reported cracks in a post 01/07 model.

Good Luck and welcome to the forum!

100% in agreement. It's very possible that without bernd intially discovering this problem and the nearly 1000 posts that have followed so far, Toyota would've never become aware of this.

Not only has this brought the problem to the attention of Toyota, but also to hundreds of FJ owners (including myself) who never would've even known to check their engine bay.

It could've just as easily been written off by dealerhsips as a collection of isolated instances that may not have ever made it any further than an occasional individual fix, if even that.

Again, major kudos to bernd and his discriminating eye that got the ball rolling on all of this. Thanks, Bear!! And, big thanks to everyone else who followed through on making this a known issue to both Toyota and the rest of us.

Steve, you are a silver tongued devil! Hats off to Bernd, you, MudLovingFJ and all the rest who are actively chasing the problem!!!

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

would it be interesting or useful to set up a poll with BUILD DATES and problems or no problems, current mileage, etc?
my build date is 9/06......no problems so far.

I think it's a good idea.. Although I'm not sure about these "polls." I'm pretty sure we have people marking the poll when they don't have a problem at all..

I think someone should gather the data (build date info) independantly.. maybe an excel file or something to provide to Toyota.

Excellent work chasing this rabbit all the way down the hole. Your efforts will help out a lot of people who have or may experience this problem.

more info today:

i just got back from the dealership and the body shop. they told me that there were 2 toyota reps looking at my truck and a japanese rep looking at it as well. the body shop will be disassembling the front of the truck tomorrow to see if they can find the source of the problem.

i talked to the body guy for about an hour and we discussed some of the possibilities as to why this is occuring. there are a few possibilities, but we cannot be sure until my truck is taken apart and some inspection is done.

i was told that either a tsb or a recall will be in order for this issue.

now the kind of bad part. it will be a minimum of 6-8 weeks until a solution is come upon.

everyone needs to sit tight and let toyota do what they need to do to come to their solution.

sit tight guys....the ball has begun to roll and has already gained a lot of speed....

I would tend to agree with you, DEEZUS. Otherwise, we would've seen a lot more members posting up about their FJ's. However, it seems like a good chunk of them have since disappeared into the woodwork for some unknown reason.

My guess is that Toyota has already compiled such a survey/report in an effort to narrow down the actual cause and appropriate fix.

I'm still here, have not had a lot of time to do much, I still need to get in to my local dealer and see what if anything they'll do for mine.

Thanks to all who worked hard on this for the rest of us
