it would be pretty funny and ironic, wouldnt it.
but the funny thing is that everyones stock speedometer is off from the factory; it corrects itself when you put a larger tire on. a 285/70r17 actually displays the correct speed. isnt that a little interesting?
Well, I guess I should've been more patient. Because it looks like all the stock FJ's out there will now be getting free tire upgrades and lift kits as part of their TSB fix.

but once again, dont quote me on it....
Definitely don't quote me on what I just said either. Just kidding . . . . but then again, stranger things have happened.
Very interesting theory, MudLoving. Not to mention, pretty damn logical.
After all this worry and speculation about aftermarket accessories being the suspected culprits, wouldn't it be ironic as hell if bigger tires and lift kits were not only eliminated as being the cause of this problem . . . . . but in fact, they very well might be the cure??
One way to quickly disprove this theory is to find a totally stock FJ that has the bulging/crack issue and has not been off-road or wheeled to the point that their suspension would even articulate to the extreme such that it would "grab" the fender.. Have we seen this scenario yet??
Or.. take the other side of it. Find an FJ that was lifted from the get-go (fresh off the lot) and has the cracking/bulging problem. (this one is a bit debatable because I suppose different lifts, tires, and wheel offset combos could simulate a very similar situation to a stock setup..)
...another thing.. "grabbing" the fender really doesn't make sense by the effect we are seeing.. When I hear grabbing it makes me think the tire is getting "hung" up on the "rebound" or extension stroke..
The bulges/cracks seem to indicate the tire/wheel impacting the fender well inwards.. or on the way up during the "compression" stroke.
..Mudloving, perhaps you can give us a better explanation?
my truck is all apart and getting ready for NEW REVISED inner fender panels. the body shop was in contact with toyota and they said they have new panels made to fix this problem. they did NOT say if they were a new made panel, or just panels off of the 2008 truck. i will be getting both panels replaced.
there will more than likely be a TSB for this issue. once my truck is done they will spend some more time researching the issue and then will possibly send out the TSB. I am not sure exactly how this will work, however, so dont quote me on it .
I was told ny the body shop guy that it is possible that this issue is caused by the factory wheels and tires coming up andd grabbing the inner fenders with stock suspension. this explains why it is happening to more of the stock trucks. my lift and wheels/tires were put on after 5k miles. i now have 14k. the cracks on my truck could have started when the truck was stock and since i have lifted it it could have stopped the cracking process. this all is still to be tested and determined though.
her it is today:
And it appears that they are able to do it without screwing with any part of the engine....Great news indeed!!!
Hey you oughtta have-em throw an aftermarket bumper on while they have it apart...Just a thought.
I am pushing 36K miles. Consequently, what I want to know is what Toyota will do for me IF bulges/cracks develop after the warranty period is up? Right now I am almost wishing that I had them.

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips
so i just got off the phone with my service rep. he said that he ordered the different panels today and they went to instant backorder. dont know exactly what it means for all of us, dont know if it means the panels are new, different, or whatever.....
he also said he will try to get the truck back together for me because he doesnt want the panels to be on backorder for 3 weeks or something like that and have my truck just sitting at the body shop in peices for the time being. i might get my truck back today if possible but will have to take it in again when the panels actually arrive.

I just got a call looks like my truck is going to the regional office for some engineers to look at it. They want to figure out what is causing the ripping. So hopefully this is good news for us all. I'll post up what they come up with after I get it back. It goes in on Thursday.

I turned down the rental car. They say its only going to be gone for the day. I'll drive my Silverado that day. If they do repair it I will take a car for that time.

So they stripped your poor baby naked for the big wigs, got you all excited about a fix, only to leave it defiled like that?? That's just not right.
