It is not strictly cosmetic, your crumple zones are being pre-stressed and and broken before they are even needed. They will not be able to fully absorb the impact like they were designed to do, when an accident occurs. They are purely cosmetic if your FJ is just parked.
Also, to add one more thing, the rear can be
replaced, but as of now, the cause of the
body rip in unknown, and there is no cure...

Hello Again All:

LandCruiser07,

Just for my future reference, please tell me why Toyota would go through the time and expense of designing and redesigning, placing and replacing an engine bay panel if it were merely "cosmetic".

Please also describe for me why blowing a differential in the desert, 50 miles from any help, is a bigger problem and less important than, say, cruising to work in the morning and some idyot crosses the line and hits you head-on?
Or my fear... the front end comes apart from the ROOTCAUSE and your vehicle goes catastrophic on the freeway.

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

What, why are soo worried about your diff blowing when you have a front one which will get you home, Maybe a little slower than you want but it will do it.. And besides you blew it 4x4'ing, what about all the other times we have blown a rear diff 4x4ing what did we do then? we drove it home or fixed it on the trail..

The inner fender rips can't be fixed (right now at the shop or on the road) on the trail and could end up causing a lot of harm if you were in an crash...

This is a little more life threating than a rear diff blowing out in the sticks...

Get real.

Get real? I think you are the one who should 'get real'. What if you cannot drive it? What if the teeth on the ring gear blow and the whole diff becomes trashed and will not move? What if you cannot fix it on the trail? If you get stranded in the desert or someplace remote, you are screwed, and it is more life threatening than some engine bay body rips. You all are the ones who need to get real. If you crash, your FJ will absorb the impact regardless, and your air bags will engage and save your life. There are no safety bags for broke down in the middle of no-where.

Engine bay body rips are cosmetic, and not structural. A frame coming apart, that would be structural.

Proof we have morons on this forum. If you not concerned about body rips, quit reading and commenting on this thread. If diff. problems are your BIG concern, visit that thread and leave us alone.

I love those smileys haha. They were begging for a strong response. No, I am NOT concerned about a minor cosmetic issue.

I'm sorry, this is normally a friendly forum and a great bunch of people. Maybe you aren't the idiot you seem to be.
Rear diff = big issue
rips = BIGGER issue
These are not merely cosmetic and do affect the crumple zones. There is this little thing called physics that comes into play in this universe. You are obviously unfamiliar with it, that makes the issue more than small. The folks here who paid 30 grand for their trucks are concerned, and they should be. Here is where they come to get info, etc. It is a good thing, not bad, and they should not be insulted.
Neither should you I guess, for something obviously beyond your grasp, so, apologies.

Gentlemen, gentlemen. Let's please lighten up a bit on this topic.

And, welcome to you new guys. Constructive disagreements are nice and healthy. But, let's not jump onboard with nothing but criticisms, okay?? Thanks.
