Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

I found out that Longo Toyota (SOCAL) within the last 15 days had 8 FJ's come in with the engine bay rips. 1 is an 08, most with mods, but 3 without.

That was my initial reaction as well, and a "No Way!". What I have heard is Toyota Motor Corporation (TMS Parent Co in Japan) has "no appropriate countermeasure in place or planed.".

There is currently no TSB or Recall in place or plans to have one put into place.

It's probably subject to interpretation, but doesn't that just say they haven't yet designed a permanent fix?

Sorry, but I highly doubt they are just simply not going to fix it. Not with this vehicle and this crowd. You don't screw the biggest following of brand loyal people you have for you product and screw them. I would be very surprised if they did. I think they don't "have plans" is because they don't have a fix. For a company like this, you don't anounce a recall, or even a fix untill you have a way to fix it.

I hope that's not the case but I have to admit that I'm becoming more concerned about the delay. The "or planned" part if true is disheartening. This issue has been around now for some time now and was present on the Prado. I would have hoped TMC would have at least notified owners that they were aware of the problem and that a solution would be forthcoming. As time goes on, it seems more likely that their plan of attack is to deal with each one on an individual basis leaving us at the hands of our respective dealerships. Hopefully that’s not the case, but some good PR to FJ owners from TMC would go a long way right now.

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

You guys, I'm on our side. I have heard this internally at TMS and TTC (Toyota Technical Center). Currently there is no fix in the works from TMC. They do not understand what is causing the problem right now. Currently the belief is there is an abnormal issue with body roll that they are not experinecing on the 4runner which utilizes the same aprons and frame. Only one vehicle in the Toyota fleet has a boxed reinforce apron, which is the Lexus GX.

They are thinking about using the design of the GX apron for the FJ during 09, but they are not planning on retooling the manufacturing plant for this year.

There are two ways Toyota will mandate the change immediatly. If corrective costs outweigh fixing the issue at the factory (TMS was changed 12,800) to fix my rig, or someone (one of us) gets hurt due to the failed crumple zone.

I still believe it is imparative for us to bring up the issue immediatly with our dealer and TMS once we become aware of ripping or buldging.

Also, I worked in the auto industry for ten years (TMS in Torrance to be exact)... people get screwed on occassion. Thats why we have the lemon law, recalls and customer satifaction idexes.
