Looks like the same apron design to me. What's completely different about it?

I have a couple of questions. I have just bought a 2008 FJ and am just now getting in on this discussion. I have read comments that the fix is for Toyota to replace the inner fenders with new reinforced units. My questions are: (1) Does Toyota have the replacement units available. (2) Are they using them on the current production models (ie: my 2008 model).

As far as I know, the "reinforced" replacement inner fenders are nothing more than the updated version that are currently in the '08 models. I wouldn't call it a reinforcement, but a redesign. The crumple zones are in a slightly different place than the '06-'07 models. I know people with both '08 models and someone with the replacements of ripped fenders with the newer version. Both are bulging.

Has anyone reported that Toyota has provided warranty repair of this issue?
Has anyone reported that Toyota has provided warranty repair of this issue?
To my knowledge, no, because there is no "fix" yet. We're still in the "Toyota is aware of the issue and is working on a solution.", as myself and others have been told by Toyota reps.
As I noted in a previous message, the rep said the above, took pictures of my rips, and specifically told my dealership that my lift, bumper, tires, etc. were not to blame.

Has anyone reported that Toyota has provided warranty repair of this issue?
I know that the one person I know that had there's replaced (and who is now showing bulges again) had there's done under warranty. When I reported mine, they offered to "fix" mine, also under warranty. I told them no, I will wait for the real fix. Once the real cause of the problem is solved, then, and only then, will I have them fix the fenders. And because I had them documented before the 36K expiration of the warranty, it will be covered even if my warranty expires before the fix is announced. That is what the service manager at the dealership I took it to said.

There is no way I will buy an FJ now, after reading this thread. And I was so set to get one. My wife and I test drove one and I had some great internet quotes. It was just a matter of deciding on a color and then negotiating the trade-in. But this defect really worries me. As a previous poster commented, this could really affect resale value and that is part of the reason I was excited about getting a Toyota.
It's going to be so hard each time I see an FJ on the road. Hopefully they'll fix it on the '09s and I'll just have to wait. Man, and I was willing to overlook the visibility issues, doors trapping you in a parking lot, no sunroof...it's just such a cool truck, but the wife would kill me if I got it now

Well, it's not a cool truck. It's a very cool SUV. The Tacoma is a cool truck.
I suppose it depends on what you want. If you care about resale value, then wait. I don't. I'll be keeping mine for a long long time. I'm sure Toyota will eventually come up with a fix however. Then there will be no issue with the resale value, even for the ones that were effected, and then fixed. Look at the Land Rover Defenders. They had some serious problems, including rusting from the inside out. Those damn things are still worth almost what they were new. It's insane. Why, because they are a damn good vehicle. Honestly, from a reliability standpoint, I think the FJ will prove to be as good. Especially after a few more model year changes, which are already taking place. If I knew about this issue before I bought it, I would STILL buy it. If I had the means to, I would buy another one right now simply to make it a different kind of vehicle than what I've done with mine. About the only thing I would concider right now other than an FJ is the new Defender, which isn't available in the US or Canada for some odd reason. You can't get a friggin loaf of bread in Zambia, but you can get a Defender!!! I'm not bitter.

That is not completely accurate. Toyota IS providing warranty repairs on all affected vehicles that are brought into dealerships and determined to have the bulging/cracking problem. The problem is the I, like spincycle and others, do not believe that the current factory fix, replacing the inner fender aprons with updated models, is actually going to solve the problem

X2. That's why I'm holding off on my already-approved repair until the true source of the problem has been determined.
