at 101 pages I'm looking for it but searching fender brace didn't bring anything up.

Fender Brace solution?

this is something Nissan's and Subaru's use to stiffen the chassis but could go a long way towards prevention. there are about 4 companies making these for S chassis Nissan's('89-'01 180sx 200sx 240sx and silvia) alone and its more popular with the Subaru guys.
It just might be a problem when in a front collision. The crumple zone won't be able to absorb impact and that would then be transfered to the occupants. Though it just might beat the front end falling off

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

^^^ That is what I fall back on... I paid for a
vehicle that was supposed to be a sound design
and meet certain crash rating, and not bulge
or crack... Now, it seems there is an issue, and
what was represented to me when I purchased
this vehicle is not the package I recieived... IMO...

So, Am I stupid for thinking this way ?... We don't
know what the cause is yet, and I don't have any
significant bulging, just a little nub, but what
happens to the value of my vehicle if/when this
happens ?... Do I get to eat the loss and count
it up to my stupidity ?...

Even if the fender skirt gets repaired and a frame
rail plate gets added to stiffen the frame rails,
you have taken a loss of value to you vehicle,
it's the same as if you were in a collision IMO,
there will be a loss of value due to the vehicle
having a repair done...

If there is distortion and/or bending in the frame
rail or fender skirts, do you feel as if the crash
survivability will be the same or will be changed ?

I still love my FJ and it's capabilities, and will be
keeping it, Heck, I will prolly chop the roof, add
a cage, do a SAS, and so on, but I will hope
Toyota will be there and stand behind this issue
by coming up with a solution to keep this from
happening...

If you've "crumpled" to the point of those braces (at approximately firewall depth), they are the least of your concerns......cause you and your passenger are sitting very close to your engine and transmission now.

From the way those crumple points look (bigger and more on the upper portion) it seems as if they are there to absorb the more extreme forces by allowing the body to actually bend and not just crush in a purely straight line. I don't think that brace would allow it to work in such a way.

Not sure, but I think that is around 40mph.

TT is a 06 build due to the apron style.
That does not mean anything since my driver side (07 - 08 style) started bulging 1200 miles after replacement.

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

It seem to me that some are putting too much emphasis on crumple zones in a 4000+ lb vehicle. Try not to hit any walls at 60 miles per hour and you should be fine, especially with the all encompassing airbag system in these things. I full well understand the absolute need for crumple zones on the itty-bittys since they don't have momentum on their side and are generally created with the lightest components available. We somehow managed to survive without crumple zones for longer than we have had them. It seems to me that a stiffener in the area of the bulges would in no way affect the crumple zones built into the frame which, unless you are hitting a wall, will take most of an impact when you hit most of the othe vehicles on the road.

I wouldn't have a problem bolting on something similar to this to prevent future problems and will probably start mocking up some templates before long, but don't get me wrong I'll definitely say...

If I was a CEO at Toyota Motor Corporation I would be embarrassed to see 1 year old vehicles off of my production line requiring aftermarket structural braces to prevent chassis failure.

as true as your photo may be, it can easily be argued that everyone here is putting "band-aids" on less evident and perceived problems based expectations and desires of off-road performance.

Re: Engine Bay Body Rips

Hy guys, i'm a new italian member of this forum and i have bought a fj cruiser built in 01/07 last week, but i never think that some fjc have this kind of problem. I would to know if there is a solution and what is the toyota official position about this problem. It' very important for me because this veichle is not official imported in Italy from toyota and the warranty is provide by the local dealer.
thanks.
Stefano.

p.s. this ropture may arrive in normal use or in high off road use?
