Damn Steve, I new you were an old fart, but 67!? Your quick whit and nimble speed (I saw you jump to the podium during the raffle) are deceptively misleading...
By the way (back on topic) I have a friend who's going to be reinforcing his engine bay body rips in the next few weeks. We'll be documenting the entire process and I'll post the link as soon as it's up. Would love to read everyones feedback once it's completed.

It's amazing what a shot of Geritol and a can of Ensure (not to mention the incentive of some winning raffle tickets) can do to keep ancient bodies moving. You should've seen how fast I was when Depends were on sale at Target last week.

He's choosing to reinforce the existing cracks rather than have Toyota deal with it?? Had he already reported his situation to a dealership or district rep?
I got back from the Power Toyota with news they will fix my inner fenders no questions asked. He told me they are suppose to have re-inforced fender aprons to replace the old ones. He told me he has a pair in for another guys truck. I asked him if I could look at them to see what they did. We went to the parts department and the guy brought out the apron. We couldnt find any difference between the new and exsisting. He made a call to Toyota to see what is going on. I am just waiting for an answer. Since we get the red carpet treatment with Power, I may be able to get aprons to reinforce , or come up with a fix, then they can schedule to install then as they planned originally. One way or the other my truck will be taken care of by the dealer. The guys at Power ar by far the best dealership I have dealt with. I would recommend them highly. I also have a contact for those of you local to the phoenix area
Ohh by the way we have a new trail teams FJ in our garage now. They let us take it overnight to decide if we want to keep it

There's the quick whit I speak of. Can't wait to see you again at the Summit. I could use the chuckles!

He's getting them repaired at the dealership and then doing the reinforcing. He's working with a fabricator to make it bullet proof. He's not overly concerned about the tears, but is having them made like new before he goes for the reinforcement. He's a pretty smart guy and knows what he's doing. The fabricator he's working with is somewhat of a genius. I know what he's proposing may not be for everyone, but he's willing to take a damn good shot at fixing (permanently) that specific stress area. I'm really anxious to document the reinforcement and do follow-ups.

I love it. "Ohh... by the way..." Bastard.
I'm guessing you sold Rose on driving an FJ?
Awesome. I can't wait to see it... and then see you tear into it with a crow bar and an OBNOXIOUS amount of jealousy inducing mods!

Interesting. But, won't that affect the ability of the "crush zone" to do its job in the event of an accident?? Will a added-on reinforcement still permit that safety zone to fold and collapse as necessary to absorb the shock of a collision?

It is my opinion that the other 4000+ pounds of steel behind that zone will crumple anytthing you use as a reinforcement anyway. I would be more concerned with crumple zones in smaller lighter vehicles than in a large SUV.

Steve, his opinion is that he's not too worried about it. I don't want to speak for him before we document the repair and get all the physics and theoreticals down before I start tossing my own opinions out there, but I don't think he's really worried about anything but a semi at this point.

If you get hit by a semi all the crumple zones in the world won't make a bit of difference. The reason crumple zones are so necessary in smaller cars is because when they impact a larger vehicle they lose momentum so quickly that the occupants are thrown forward violently. In larger SUVs and trucks the vehicle doesn't decelerate as quickly due to momentum (there's physics for you) so the occupants aren't subjected to the same amount of forces as they are in a smaller car. Ever wonder why crumple zones became necessary as we moved towards lighter unibody cars? On top of that since this isn't a unibody vehicle and the frame also has crumple zones, which are further forward than the ones in the engine bay, we are still protected. Now that is why i am not worried. I appologize that i don't go running through the streets screaming the sky is falling.
