The bulge has started on my FJ, driver side. It's going into Toyota of San Diego Monday. They will need it for about 2 weeks. My concern is will it rip again and will Toyota continue to fix it at their cost after the warranty has expired?
Two weeks of labor is expensive. If the repair does not resolve the problem that means Toyota should have to do it again. That is "Muda" and that is not Toyota way of working.
If I was you, I would hold off on repairs and just have it documented, with the option to have it fixed when they know what they are doing…. The real fix is not in yet….

I'm of the same mind. Why replace a problem with a problem?

Me, too.
I was one of the very first ones to get the replacement/repair authorized, and I've been sitting on it ever since until a known cure comes along.
I have no intentions whatsoever of having it done twice.
I’m in agreement w/ you all. No since in doing this twice.
I received a call from the dealership today asking if it would be OK to wait for the newest apron to arrive in about 90 days, prior to starting the repair. “Of course” I said.
This apron assembly will be Toyota’s 2nd revision and third apron assembly total. I still have the original apron in my FJC.
Get it documented , then hold off, hold off, hold off
Did I say you should hold off yet?
Why get anything replaced if it isn't an actual fix? Your front end won't fall off because of the cracking or bulging aprons. They are a problem, but not to the degree of making your truck not roadworthy. This is not unibody b.s. Its a stress on a body part. You still have a frame that is not affected by the body part.
I think Toyota will step up and get this figured out, then honor all documented cases. As always, panic sets in and some think the truck will be driving then just break into pieces while your A## skids down the street
IMHO
For the stock FJ's in our little pole.
If you haven't had your case documented.. please do. I haven't spoke with a service rep who has seen one of these yet. So some perception its a mod/ offroad thing.
Definitely hold off. Mine has been in the shop for 2 solid weeks and no solution yet. Being Canadian. I had to take one for the team and let them tear it apart and get pics to Toyota Canada. I guess I am the first in Ontario, maybe the country. There is no fix yet so why let them have your vehicle (like mine) for weeks. I am asking to have mine put back together and they can call me when there is a legit fix.

I just now found this thread and it's scaring the crap out of me. About two months ago I bought a brand new Trail Teams Special Edition 2008 FJ. Right now it's got about 1000 miles on it.
Just five days ago I ordered a 3" OME heavy duty lift, a Road Armor Titan bumper, a WARN M8000 winch, and an All Pro rear bumper with hitch.
Should I cancel all those mods? I haven't read this entire 200+ page post string so someone who "knows" just tell me what to do.
Also...any chance my '08 TTSE may be unafflicted with this problem - i.e. that Toyota may have "fixed" it?

I think you're going to be fine. First of all a relatively small percentage of folks have been struck with the bulge/rip issue and if I'm not mistaken, there was a change in the panels in early 2007. Continue to mod please so I will have someone in this state to go wheel with BTW, if you look at the poll data, the rip issue is more prevalent in bone stock rigs than any other category....
